As I prepare for my first session of our DHB's non-diet approach group this evening, I can't help but reflect back on a post by a Dietitian that I read today.. it basically said that people in slightly larger bodies should not diet but those in significantly larger bodies should absolutely try to lose weight by dieting. It made me wonder if this person had actually read the dismal stats on long term weight loss success (or lack of) with dieting, or on the effect that weight stigma and pressure to lose weight has on the self esteem and mental health of these patients... how about we focus on the actual behaviours and health changes, and let weight do whatever it's naturally going to do in the background. Because it will be different for everybody, and there are so many things that influence body weight that it's actually a really crappy indicator of health and health behaviours.
