Babies need to be held whenever they fuss — and not just because they’re sweet and cuddly and their hair smells like heaven. It turns out there’s a ton of research out there to back up the claim that you literally cannot spoil a baby. In fact, holding your baby is actually vital for their health and development. 💛

A study published in Woman and Birth has explored the impact of COVID-19 on the provision of respectful maternity care.

Asefa et al (2021) set out to, “explore how the COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected frontline health workers’ ability to provide respectful maternity care globally.”

They, “conducted a global online survey of health workers to assess the provision of maternal and newborn healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The researchers collected survey data from 1127 health workers in 71 countries and also carried out a qualitative study which included 120 participants from 33 of those countries.

The results will probably not surprise those who have been involved in pregnancy and birth during this time.

“The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected the provision of respectful maternity care in multiple ways.

Six central themes were identified: less family involvement, reduced emotional and physical support for women, compromised standards of care, increased exposure to medically unjustified caesarean section, and staff overwhelmed by rapidly changing guidelines and enhanced infection prevention measures.

Further, respectful care provided to women and newborns with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection was severely affected due to health workers’ fear of getting infected and measures taken to minimise COVID-19 transmission.”

This amazing organ is your placenta. But.. Did you know?

A placenta is the only transient organ we have. Paternal genes, inherited from the father, are responsible for making the placenta.
It literally bores its way into the mother’s vessels, forcing them to dilate, and then proceeds to produce hormones which raise the mother’s blood pressure and blood sugar.
Evolutionary theorists now think of the placenta as more like a parasitic takeover of the mother’s body by paternal genes in the foetus.
Shared between mother and baby, the placenta provides nutrients, oxygen, and blood.. A multi functioning organ - it works as lungs, kidney, and a gastrointestinal and immune system.
The placenta communicates with the mother, using bits of itself called exosomes, and incredibly, the more this communication occurs, the larger the placenta will usually be!
A mothers immunity is transferred into her placenta, so that our babies are born with double the concentration of blood antibodies as us!
During the birthing process, the placenta detaches from the mother, leaving her with an internal wound, approximately the size of a dinner plate.
And..each time a woman gets pregnant, a new placenta grows!

What we can do is amazing! ❤️
