It’s been a month since Vicki Carter from Cushman & Wakefield was named Emerging Facilities Management Professional of the Year, and today we’re reflecting on what made her truly stand out to the judges.

Vicki's journey into facilities management is nothing short of inspiring - making a rapid transition from other sectors and quickly progressing from entry-level roles to managing complex portfolios across both public and private sectors.

What set Vicki apart was her exceptional blend of operational excellence and growing strategic thinking. Most impressive was her ability to align FM operations with broader organisational goals, demonstrating a profound understanding of FM’s strategic value.

Guest judge Pamela Bell from the Building Institute Aotearoa captured this perfectly in the winner’s citation:

“Our winner demonstrates an exceptional blend of operational excellence, growing strategic thinking, and a strong commitment to community impact through FM and professional growth... With passion, innovation, and professionalism, our winner is a rising force in FM and a true role model for emerging professionals.”

Congratulations once again, Vicki!

We’re excited to welcome back economist Shamubeel Eaqub as a speaker at this year’s FM Summit.

Last year, Shamubeel’s candid presentation cut through the pressures facing the economy and facilities management sector, assuring us:

“The work you do adds an enormous amount of value but right now you're doing it in the context of a lot of economic pressures. But get ready for the recovery because it is coming and we know that better is possible.”

Shamubeel’s return this year is timely, as he brings a fresh perspective on the current economy and the ongoing challenges shaping Aotearoa.

His session, 'The Economy in Motion – Performance, Priorities & Place', will provide an economic update and explore the shifting landscape of public investment, making the case for maintaining existing infrastructure. He’ll also highlight the critical, though often unseen, role facilities professionals play in sustaining a resilient and prosperous economy.

Building on his final thought last year about staying open to new evidence and playing a connecting role across stakeholders, Shamubeel’s message will encourage us to understand how these evolving priorities impact our sector and the wider community.

Catch the video clip from last year's presentation in the post comments.

Be part of the FM event of the year, 8–10 October at Tākina Convention Centre, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

We’re delighted to announce our first speaker for this year’s FM Summit - Lewis Weatherall, Director of Business Case Consulting Limited.

This year’s theme - “Whakairo ā-whare, whakairo ā-ngākau – the crafting of buildings is the crafting of hearts” - reminds us that the spaces we care for shape both our communities and their wellbeing.

Yet with much of our infrastructure aging, assets nearing the end of their useful lives, and critical systems under pressure from decades of underinvestment, the need for persuasive, evidence-based investment stories has never been greater.

Lewis’ session, ‘Persuade with Purpose: Better Business Cases for Better Facilities’, will show how to transform data into compelling narratives that secure the change and investment required to keep our facilities performing beautifully, safely, and sustainably.

With over 25 years of public sector experience, and as the lead developer of New Zealand’s Better Business Cases (BBC) guidance, Lewis brings deep expertise in shaping strategy into action. We’re thrilled to have him set the stage for how better stories can help us build better places and better futures.

Join hundreds of leaders, decision-makers, and custodians of our assets who are shaping Aotearoa’s multi-billion-dollar facilities management industry. Be part of the FM event of the year, 8–10 October at Tākina Convention Centre, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

Early bird rates end 12 September – secure your spot now on the FM Summit 2025 website.

Today, we’re celebrating the outstanding achievement of AUT - Auckland University of Technology’s Estates Group, recipient of this year’s FMANZ Team of the Year Award.

The judges highlighted their outstanding leadership in FM, innovative technology use, and a data-driven approach that achieved a lower property footprint per user than sector averages.

The team's commitment to sustainability is reflected in facilities with best-in-class carbon footprints and major decarbonisation projects, setting new sector standards. Their focus on professional development, industry engagement, and continuous improvement was praised, as was their generous sharing of knowledge.

Guest judge Stella Green. FFMANZ, from Workfuture - BeConfident Change Consultants, commended the team in the winner’s citation.

“Despite limited resources, this effective team has delivered measurable outcomes, high satisfaction ratings, and capital projects on a lean budget. Their commitment to professional development, industry engagement, and continuous improvement, along with a generous sharing of knowledge, sets a new standard in team performance in facilities management.”

Congratulations to the AUT Estates Group.

Reflecting on another energising week in the FMANZ National Series, our breakfast events in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato truly reinforced that ISO standards are anything but boring.

Anthony Van Meer once again delivered, making ISO 41001 FM standards relevant with wit and clarity, and offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at international FM standard development and the essential bridge between asset management and facilities management.

It was fantastic to see so many local FM colleagues engaging with global standards and discovering their real-world value for everyday work. The discussions highlighted just how much we gain by sharing a common FM language across Aotearoa and the world.

We’re not done yet! The National Series continues with our final two events in Canterbury and Otago later this month.

If you want to learn, laugh, and connect with your FM peers, don’t miss out - head over to the FMANZ Learning & Events webpage and secure your spot today.

Today, we’re proud to highlight the success of Richard Boyter, Facilities Manager at Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, recipient of this year’s Sustainability & Environmental Impact award.

Richard impressed the Ngā Tohu a FMANZ Awards judges with his leadership on a complex, transformational decarbonisation project at one of Aotearoa’s most high-profile cultural institutions - the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Read more about this inspiring project in the FMANZ case study linked in the comments below.

The judges praised his technical expertise, operational excellence, and profound sense of environmental responsibility.

Here’s what our guest judge, Bobby Shen from New Zealand Green Building Council - NZGBC, had to say in the winner citation:

“Our winner stands out as a visionary, solutions-driven leader, embodying the best of sustainable facilities management in Aotearoa. Their perseverance, systems thinking, and ability to bring others on the journey have not only delivered extraordinary outcomes but also helped elevate FM as a catalyst for climate leadership in Aotearoa. This is facilities management at its most powerful - driving real change, creating legacy, and shaping a more sustainable future.”

Congratulations again to Richard Boyter and Tātaki Auckland Unlimited for this outstanding achievement.

Our National Series breakfast events are proving that ISO standards are anything but boring.

Last week in Manawatu and Wellington, FMANZ members kicked off the day with coffee, great kai, and even better conversations, connecting and swapping ideas before diving into an eye-opening presentation from our series host, Anthony Van Meer.

With his wit and humour, Anthony brought the ISO 41001 FM standards suite to life, showing exactly how these global standards are not just relevant but essential to the everyday work of facilities managers.

Drawing on his experience as a member of the Australian Technical Committee 67 (TC67), he took us behind the scenes of the international collaboration that shapes these standards and demonstrated the powerful link between asset management and facilities management, and the shared language these standards create worldwide.

Next stops for the series are Auckland, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato this week, plus Canterbury and Otago later this month. Don’t miss the chance to learn, laugh, and connect with your FM peers. Head to the FMANZ Learning & Events web page to register today.
