Aotea

Aotea Inspired by indigenous thinkers. Therapeutic skincare. Extracted, formulated, and bottled by hand on Aotea, Great Barrier Island.

At Aotea, we are committed to making high-quality therapeutic skincare products using New Zealand native flora that are all hand-made on Aotea, Great Barrier Island. We are inspired by mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and this knowledge manifests itself in our range. Aotea is the Māori name for Great Barrier Island and it is here where we are from and where we grow the native flora we use (and extract their oils) and spin these into the products in our range. This is all done by our team on our papakāinga (land).

Ingredient Hero: Kūmarahou

Alongside its healing properties, Kūmarahou contains natural saponins that gently cleanse without the need for artificial foaming agents. Chemical surfactants are a leading contributor to skin irritation and inflammation as they strip the natural barrier.

We use Kūmarahou in our Hand and Body Wash as well as our Shampoo to ensure a safe and repairing cleanse for your body and scalp.

Harakeke

One of the most resourceful plants on Aotea and used by Iwi for hundreds of years, Harakeke is valued for its highly versatile nature.

The flax fibres can be cut to weave kete, hao and whāriki. A prepared Harakeke fibre that has been softened in boiling water or beaten til pliant is called muka. These treated fibres are commonly incorporated into cloaks and other forms of dress.

At Aotea we use Harakeke seed oil across our range for its enriching skin benefits. Harakeke seeds are packed with Linoleic acid helping with key moisture retention as it strengthens the skin barrier preventing transdermal water loss. Linoleic acid aids to stimulate cell turnover and improve skin elasticity.

A hero in our Night Cream and Hand and Body Cream, Harakeke seed oil has anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties making it ideal for calming sensitive skin and reducing congestion.

Used traditionally for generations, we are unlocking and understanding the plant actives that make Kawakawa so healing; underpinning this anecdotal use with scientific efficacy. Used to treat a variety of inflammation issues of the skin, we are working on a proprietary blend of triketones in Mānuka and diayangambin in Kawakawa: Bioactive MĀKU.

Our Story

We are inspired by Māori history and culture. We make a range of therapeutic goods that are steeped in rongoā Māori (māori remedial medicine). We use Kawakawa, Mānuka, Kūmarahou and Harakeke which all have a rich history of remedial use by Māori (and also our own community and family on Aotea). We grow these plants ourselves on our papakāinga, Aotea Great Barrier Island, and extract the the bioactive on site. We aim to create opportunity and employment for our community. We are undertaking research into the healing nature of the flora we use, particularly Kawakawa and Kūmarahou. We look forward to sharing this with you soon. Mauri ora.
