📢 Measles Update – Keeping Our Whānau Safe

Kia ora everyone,
As of 10am on 13 October, there have been 13 confirmed cases of measles in Aotearoa — 12 in Te Tai Tokerau / Northland and one separate case in Queenstown.

The good news is that the two most recent Northland cases were already in quarantine, so there are no new public exposure sites at this time.

👉 Measles spreads easily, but it’s preventable with vaccination. If you or your tamariki aren’t sure whether you’re protected, have a quick chat with your GP or practice nurse — it’s an easy way to keep our communities healthy and strong. 💪

Let’s all do our part to stay safe, look after one another, and keep measles out of our backyard. 🌿

𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟭𝟯-𝟭𝟵 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱

Are you getting enough iron in your diet? It’s probably not something you pause and think about often. Iron is essential for transporting oxygen throughout our bodies to help create energy that keeps us active and alert.

It's concerning that 30% of the world's population suffers from iron deficiency. This is particularly seen among women and children in New Zealand.

It's a great opportunity for us to take stock of our diet and see if there are any small changes we can make to ensure we’re getting enough iron.

It’s important to do so, as low iron levels can cause tiredness and impact our ability to concentrate.

Check out the links below for some tips on how you can increase your iron levels!

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month 🎀

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Kiwi women — 1 in 9 will be diagnosed in their lifetime, and sadly, around 650 women in Aotearoa lose their lives to it every year.

That’s why our Henderson Medical Centre team proudly joined the Pink Ribbon Walk this year — walking together to help change those numbers and bring hope to the thousands of women and families affected. 💕

This year, we walked in honour of the life of Jaya Patel and our dear colleague Anita Parkinson, whose strength and courage continue to inspire us every day. 🌸

A huge shout-out to our wonderful walkers: Anita Parkinson, Sneha Haughey, Wendy Duckett, Yulan Sun, Dee-Anne Knight, Razia Tazdeeq, Kerry Ackerman, and Cynthia Fainu — our very own 9 Volt Energiser Angels ⚡ — who stepped up (and dressed up in pink!) for this incredible cause.

Together, we can move closer to a future where there are zero deaths from breast cancer. 💗

💖 The 9 Volt Energiser Angels are taking on the Pink Ribbon Walk! 💖

We’re dusting off our sneakers, decking ourselves out in pink, and walking 10km together as the 9 Volt Energiser Angels ⚡👼 — all in support of women and whānau impacted by breast cancer. This cause is close to so many hearts, and we’re proud to join thousands of others in raising awareness, funding vital research, and showing support for those on this journey. 🌸

But here’s where we need you! ✨

🎀 Donate to our team — every dollar goes towards helping the Breast Cancer Foundation continue their life-saving work.

👟 Join the fun — walk with us, cheer us on, or simply show your support by sharing our page.

💌 Spread the word — the more people involved, the bigger the impact we can make together.

It’s not just about the walk — it’s about hope, strength, and making sure no one faces breast cancer alone. Every step we take, and every dollar you donate, moves us closer to a future free from breast cancer. 💕

Let’s be honest… we look way better in pink when we know it’s for a good cause! 😉💖

Kia ora koutou katoa! 🌿

He wā tino motuhake tēnei — it’s Māori Language Week — a time to waihanga reo, kia whai hua, kia nui ngā reo Māori ki o tātou rā katoa. No matter who you are, where you're from — we can all be part of this kaupapa.

Here are some simple ways to bring te reo Māori into your daily life:

🗣 Simple Ideas to Try

Start your day by saying “Mōrena” instead of “Good Morning.”
Greet someone with “Kei te pēhea koe?” (How are you?)

At the kai table: use “kai” for food, “ahua” for appearance, “haere mai” for welcome.

With the kids : sing waiata Māori, read pukapuka Māori, or make up your own kōrero (story).

🌐 Learning Resources

If you want to grow more confident, visit the Tōku Reo website https://www.tokureo.maori.nz/, which is a fabulous site full of free resources — perfect for beginners or for anyone wanting to brush up.

---

🤝 Why It Matters

Because mihi/whakapapa connect us all — te reo Māori is part of Aotearoa’s identity. Because even small efforts help normalise te reo Māori in everyday life. Celebrating together makes us all stronger, kinder, and more connected.

---

Haere mai, try something new this week — maybe just one word or phrase — and let’s lift te reo together!

🌸 September is Cervical Screening Month 🌸

Kia ora e hoa mā,
This month’s all about looking after our wahine and making sure we stay on top of our health. Cervical screening (smear tests) are a quick check that can make a massive difference in spotting any changes early on.

We get it — it’s not the flashiest thing on the to-do list, but it could save your life. Our friendly team is here to make the process as comfy and stress-free as possible. 💙

So, if you’re due (or not quite sure when your last one was), give us a bell 09 837 1110 or pop in for a kōrero. Let’s keep our wāhine strong, healthy, and thriving.

👉 Book your smear test today — your future self will thank you.

Henderson Medical Centre

Welcome to Henderson Medical Centre (HMC). We are a large medical centre situated in the heart of Henderson with a dedicated group of GP’s and Nurses ready to assist you with your healthcare needs. HMC originally worked out of premises in Glendene, but quickly outgrew there and moved into purpose-built premises on the corner of Montel Ave and Great North Road, Henderson. Our grand opening occurred on 12th September 2001 and from there we have extended to include two theatres down the back where we perform minor surgeries such as skin excisions, circumcisions, PRP, toe-nail re-sections and more. The business is currently owned by Dr Anthony Hawes who is extremely passionate about delivering quality healthcare and continuity of care whilst providing a warm and supportive environment to the West Auckland community.

For your convenience, we are open 6 days a week with 4 late nights until 8pm and Sat until 1pm. We also have an online portal available for registered patients where you can book your appointments online anytime, order repeat prescriptions and view your test results.

The team at HMC look forward to caring for you and your family.
