Perfect your supine abdominal series:

⭐️ Prepare with an inhale breath, and curl up with a slow, controlled exhale breath.

⭐️ Slide your bottom ribs toward your pelvis, lift your shoulder blades off the carriage using your abdominal muscles.

⭐️ Avoid straining your neck by pulling it with your hands – soften the shoulders away from the ears, and focus on the abdominal contraction initiating the movement, rather than pulling the head and neck.

⭐️ Hold at the top of the movement for a few seconds, before controlling the roll down.

⭐️ Aim to keep your pelvis still and stable on the carriage, particularly through any rotations in the sequence.

⭐️ With your legs in the tabletop position, maintain the 90 degree angle of the legs: knees above hips, shins parallel with the floor.

⭐️ Take it slow! Performing the movement too quickly uses momentum and neglects proper core engagement.

We use supine abdominal work to strengthen the rectus abdominis (the ‘six-pack’ muscles), the obliques (side abdominal muscles) and the transverse abdominis (your deepest layer of abdominals). Are there any movements that you’d love to perfect? Drop us a line and let us know! ⬆️

Perfect your glute lunge:

⭐️ Sit back into your lunge – initiate it from the hip, not the knee.

⭐️ Hinge forward on a 45 degree angle as you come down into your lunge. 

⭐️ Almost all of your weight will be in the front working leg and glute, while the back leg actively straightens behind.

⭐️ At the bottom of your lunge, ideally your shin bone should be vertical; knee stacked over ankle.

⭐️ Think about hips being square to the mirror in front, finding a little backwards wrap in the working glute to keep things level here.

⭐️ Consciously drive through the heel of your foot to rise from your lunge, squeezing the glute.

⭐️ Your spine will remain tall throughout the movement as you stay fully engaged in your core.

Muscles at play here include the quads, glutes, hamstrings, hip flexors, adductors, abductors, core stabilisers, even the calves. No wonder we love a lunge! Are there any movements that you’d love to perfect? Drop a line and let us know. ⬆️

ℹ️ Beginner vs. Intermediate classes. What’s the difference?

Beginner classes are the perfect place to start – this is where you will gain experience in foundational reformer pilates sequences while becoming confident in using the reformer. We still provide layers and options for every movement so you can take the class at your own pace. Everyone is welcome here, regardless of your experience level!

Once you know your way around the reformer and have noticed an improvement in your strength, balance and coordination, it’s time to move up. Our Intermediate classes provide a much greater level of challenge – the transitions between movements are quicker, the depth and intensity of the movements are greater, and the progressive options are more demanding.

No matter where you’re at on your movement journey, we aim to foster a safe environment where everyone can progress at their own pace. Unsure if you’re ready to make the jump to an Intermediate class? Just ask your instructor next time you’re in the studio!
