🚨 WE’RE CURRENTLY WITHOUT POWER 🚨

We’re currently experiencing a sudden power outage at Conifer Gardens Medical Centre.

At the moment, we’re unable to answer phone calls and don’t have a timeframe for when power will be restored. Vector has been contacted and is on the way to assess the situation.

In the meantime, we’re switching to manual processes to keep things running and continue supporting patients as best we can.

If you have an appointment today, please still come in as planned.

We’re sorry for the disruption and really appreciate your patience while we work through this.

This is your reminder to slow down.

One of the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand’s Five Ways to Wellbeing is Take Notice. It’s about being present, checking in with yourself, and appreciating the small moments.

Step outside, notice the season, and take a deep breath. It all counts. 💜

❄️ DON’T LET WINTER TRIGGER YOUR ASTHMA 🫁

Did you know asthma symptoms are often brought on by things in your environment?

Common triggers include pollen, pet dander, dust, smoke, cold air, temperature changes, and respiratory infections like colds or flu. Because many of these are more common in winter, asthma symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath can flare up more easily.

That’s why one of the best ways to stay in control of asthma is by following a written Asthma Action Plan. This personalised plan is created with your healthcare provider and outlines what to do when your asthma is well controlled, getting worse, or becoming severe.

If you live with asthma, it’s a good idea to make sure your inhalers are up to date and that your asthma action plan is reviewed at least once a year.

🔎 HOW IS ENDOMETRIOSIS DIAGNOSED? 🩺

Endometriosis affects around 1 in 10 women and people assigned female at birth.

Unfortunately, there is currently no simple screening test that can diagnose it.

Diagnosis often begins with a conversation about what you’ve been experiencing. Your clinician may ask you to track your cycle over time, arrange imaging such as an ultrasound, and refer you to a specialist if further assessment is needed.

In many cases, clinicians may suspect endometriosis based on symptoms and imaging findings. However, the only way to definitively confirm endometriosis is through a minor surgical procedure called a laparoscopy.

Remember, severe period pain that affects your quality of life should not be normalised. If your symptoms are getting worse or stopping you from living your normal life, it’s worth having a kōrero (talk) with your clinician.

For many people, receiving an endometriosis diagnosis can bring relief and validation, and help guide the next steps in care and treatment.

🫘 WORLD KIDNEY DAY 🫘

1 in 10 New Zealanders has kidney disease, and most do not know it.

Kidney disease is often called a silent condition because you can lose a large amount of kidney function before noticing symptoms.

Thankfully, there are eight simple steps you can take to reduce your risk of kidney disease. They are:

1. Keep fit and stay active
2. Eat a healthy diet
3. Check and control your blood sugar
4. Check and control your blood pressure
5. Drink an appropriate amount of water
6. Do not smoke
7. Avoid taking over-the-counter painkillers regularly
8. Get your kidney function checked if you have risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease

If you notice anything unusual, it’s worth asking your doctor or nurse how your kidneys are doing. Early detection can make a big difference.

⏰ WHEN A LITTLE MORE TIME CAN HELP 💬

Sometimes a standard appointment isn’t quite enough. Symptoms like ongoing fatigue, stress, sleep problems, or feeling generally “run down” can take a bit more time to talk through properly.

That’s where an extended appointment can help.

A longer consultation gives your clinician more time to explore what may be going on, review any relevant tests, and work with you on a plan for next steps.

If you feel an extended appointment would be helpful, please let our reception team know when you book so they can allow enough time for your visit.

😴 SLEEP IS NOT A LUXURY 🧠

World Sleep Day is this Friday, and it’s a timely reminder that sleep supports both your immune system and your mental health.

So why does sleep matter so much?

When you do not sleep well, your immune system suffers. You get sick more easily. Your stress rises. Your focus drops.

If you are regularly struggling to fall asleep, waking often, or feeling exhausted despite a full night in bed, it may be worth having a kōrero (talk) with your clinician.

Looking after your sleep is one of the simplest ways to protect both your body and mind.

👩‍⚕️ DON’T WAIT FOR WINTER TO CATCH YOU OUT 👨‍⚕️

While it may still feel like summer some days, the calendar says we are in autumn. And winter is not far away (we know…).

As temperatures drop and pesky bugs spread through our community, conditions such as asthma, diabetes, COPD and high blood pressure can become more difficult to control.

If you have one of these conditions, now is a good time to book a review before winter sets in. A simple check-in can ensure your medications are up to date and your management plan is working well for you.

Here’s to staying one step ahead this winter.

🛡️ PROTECT YOUR HEARING 👂

This World Hearing Day, it’s time to ask yourself a few honest questions. Are you:

Turning the TV up louder than others?
Asking people to repeat themselves?
Struggling in noisy rooms?

Hearing loss often happens gradually and can significantly impact your quality of life.

Turning things up louder to compensate can also cause further damage over time. Once hearing is lost, it is very difficult to restore.

If you are concerned, have a kōrero (talk) with your clinician. Our team is always here to help.
