Clutha Health First: A Community-Owned Healthcare Success Story

In the heart of the Clutha District, Clutha Health First – Hauora Tahi Ki Iwikatea stands as a powerful example of what communities can achieve when they come together to protect and shape their own healthcare future.

Born from the loss of hospital services in the 1990s, the community responded with determination—creating a bold, innovative model that brought healthcare back under one roof.

Today, Clutha Health First delivers fully integrated care for around 20,000 residents, including general practice, maternity, inpatient services, urgent care, diagnostics, and specialist clinics—all locally based to reduce travel and improve continuity of care.

It also continues to lead innovation in rural health, from the Mobile Surgical Bus to digital health systems and simulation-based training, ensuring rural communities receive high-quality, modern care.

At its core, this is a story of community ownership, resilience, and pride—showing what’s possible when rural communities refuse to let essential services disappear.

🧼 Today is Hand Hygiene Day in Aotearoa New Zealand 🧼

Good hand hygiene is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect our health. Cleaning our hands at the right times helps stop the spread of germs and keeps our patients, whānau, visitors and staff safe.

Whether you’re visiting our hospital or health centre, or caring for others at home, clean hands really do make a difference.

🎨 Waiting with us this week?
To help pass the time, we’re inviting patients and visitors to pick up a free colouring-in pack or word find to do while you’re waiting or to take home for your children. Just look out for them in our main reception waiting area.

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe — clean hands save lives.

🦠 Missed the walk in flu clinic? No worries – the flu didn’t get the memo either. 😉

If you didn’t make it along to one of our walk‑in flu vaccine clinics, it’s not too late. We still have flu vaccines available, and our friendly practice nurses are happy to help keep you protected this winter.

💉 Who can get a FREE flu vaccine in New Zealand?
From 1 April, the flu vaccine is funded for people who are more likely to get very sick from the flu, including:
• Anyone aged 65 years and over.
• Pregnant people.
• People under 65 with certain long‑term health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or a weakened immune system).
• People with serious mental health conditions or who are accessing mental health or addiction services.
• Some children, including those with significant respiratory illness or other eligible health conditions.
• Those who are of Maori or Pacifica ethnicity and are aged between 50 -64 years.

If you’re not sure whether you’re eligible, our team can talk this through with you.

📞 To book your flu vaccination, please call our team on 419 0500 to make an appointment.

Getting vaccinated helps protect you, your whānau, and our wider community – and it’s one of the easiest things you can do to stay well this winter. ❄️

Don’t let the flu catch you first!
