📍For the past few months, we’ve been working together with our sister clinic, Devonport Family Medicine (DFM), and now it’s official. Belmont Medical Centre (BMC) is joining DFM at one location; 2 Fleet Street, Devonport.

🤝What began as a temporary setup has shown us how much better we can care for our community when we work together — smoother communication, easier access, and a more connected team. While we’re sad to close the BMC site, your trusted GPs and nurses remain the same.

💙Many families have been with BMC for generations, and that same personal, high‑quality care continues. Thank you for your support as we make this positive step forward for our community.

🧠Brain Awareness Week runs from 10–16 March, offering a moment to pause and learn more about how our brains work and the research helping us care for them.

✅As we age, our brains naturally change, and staying informed about our brain health can make a real difference.

🎗️ HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Awareness Day.
HPV is very common — most of us will come into contact with it at some point. While it often has no symptoms, some strains can increase the risk of cervical and other cancers.

🎯Let HPV Awareness Day be a reminder to check in on your health and the steps you can take to protect it. The HPV vaccine offers strong protection against the strains linked to several cancers, and in New Zealand, it’s fully funded for those aged 9 - 27 years. Regular cervical screening is also important for anyone with a cervix to stay on top of their wellbeing.

📋If you’re due for a cervical screen or would like to get your HPV vaccination sorted, contact the clinic to book in with us anytime.

❓Did you know our bones naturally lose strength as we get older? When bone density drops too much, it can lead to osteoporosis — a condition that’s more common in women over 50 and men over 75.

✅Some bone loss is normal with age, but factors like low vitamin D, being less active, hormone changes, and certain health conditions can increase the risk.

🎯Treatment isn’t one‑size‑fits‑all. It’s based on bone‑density scan results, your age, medical history, and how advanced the condition is. The most helpful step is looking after your bones early and consistently.

⚠Most of us turn on the tap to drink water without thinking, but after heavy rain, bacteria like E. coli or coliforms can sometimes make their way into drinking water.

🎯Across New Zealand, most water supplies are treated to remove harmful organisms. If you’re not sure whether your area is on a treated supply, you can check here: https://healthify.nz/hauora-wellbeing/d/drinking-water-safety

🩺If you’re unsure about your water quality, or if an issue has been reported, boiling your water for at least one minute is an easy way to keep it safe. And if you start feeling unwell, it’s always worth checking in with your healthcare provider.

💙February is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month — time to learn the signs and look after ourselves.

🎯Around 16 in every 1,000 women will develop ovarian cancer in their lifetime, and while factors like genetics, BRCA mutations, or age can play a part, many people are diagnosed without a clear cause.

✅Which is why knowing the symptoms really matters. If something doesn’t feel right, checking in with your healthcare provider is always a good step.

🎯February is Heart Health Awareness Month, a gentle reminder to pause and check in on how we’re caring for our hearts. Heart attacks remain one of the leading causes of death in New Zealand, and the everyday choices we make, like staying active, eating well, quitting smoking, and managing our health risks, can make a real difference.

❗It’s also important to recognise early warning signs like pain or discomfort, dizziness, unusual tiredness, shortness of breath, sweating, or nausea. Know the signs should you need to call 111 straight away.

💟If you’d like a clearer picture of your heart health, you’re welcome to book a check‑in with your practitioner. You can also get an early sense of your risk through the Heart Foundation’s My Heart Check tool: https://www.heartfoundation.org.nz/your-heart/my-heart-check

☀️ With the summer break in full swing and long days spent outdoors, it’s easy to get caught up in the sunshine and forget something your body relies on every day: staying hydrated.

🎯Your body gives you early clues of thirst when it’s running low on water. You may notice discomfort, low energy, flushed skin or nausea with mild dehydration. If it progresses, symptoms can become more intense, like dizziness, headaches, difficulty breathing or trouble swallowing. And over time, consistently low fluid intake can increase the risk of kidney stones, urinary tract cancers, some colon cancers, heart valve problems, and reduced physical or mental performance.

💧 This summer, make hydration part of your routine. Keep water with you, take regular sips, and pay attention to your body’s signals. Staying hydrated helps you enjoy the season feeling well and comfortable.

☀️ Heading into Christmas and sunnier days means more beach time, festive gatherings, and plenty of time outdoors. But while the sun feels good, too much exposure can cause real harm.

🎯Sunburn isn’t just uncomfortable; it damages your skin, speeds up ageing, and increases your risk of skin cancer later in life. In New Zealand, melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, with more than 2,000 cases reported each year. Fairer skin burns more easily, but UV radiation can damage skin of any colour. That’s why being sun smart matters for everyone.

Here’s how to protect yourself this holiday season:
✨Slip into a long-sleeved shirt or find shade
✨Slop on sunscreen of at least SPF30+
✨Slap on a wide-brimmed hat
✨Wrap on sunglasses to shield your eyes

Enjoy the sunshine, celebrate the season, and look after your skin. Learn more about staying sun smart: https://healthify.nz/health-a-z/s/sunburn?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email%20marketing&utm_campaign=Healthify%20Tips%20-%20December
