šŸŽÆ92% of breast cancers are treatable when found early. That’s why it’s so important to know what’s normal for your breasts, including how they usually look and feel. This helps you notice any changes quickly.

šŸ’ŸOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a reminder to care for your breast health at every age. Checking your breasts is simple. Just remember TLC: Touch, Look, Check. It’s a habit that can help you catch changes early and take action. If something doesn’t feel right, make sure to book an appointment and speak with your doctor.

šŸ’šThis Mental Health Day, let’s pause and check in with ourselves and with those around us.

šŸŽÆConnection isn’t just comforting, it’s essential. Whether it’s a chat with a friend, joining a community event, or simply showing up for someone, these moments help us feel grounded, valued, and supported. Research shows that social interactions, such as volunteering, shared learning, movement, and cultural connection, can make a real difference in our wellbeing.

šŸ—ØIf you’re feeling heavy or unsure, don’t carry it alone. This year's 'Top Up Together' campaign encourages reaching out to someone you trust or speaking with a healthcare professional. Support is always within reach. Find out what you can take part in for Mental Health Awareness Week here: https://mhaw.nz/whats-on

🌼 School holidays winding down, and with kids heading back to school, it’s a good time to keep an eye out for school sores (impetigo). It’s a common skin infection that tends to show up in little ones.

🫧 It often starts as small blisters, then turns into itchy patches, and if scratched, it can spread to other places.

šŸ› A warm bath can help gently clean the area. After that, pop into your local pharmacy for an antiseptic cream and keep the sores covered. If things aren’t improving after a couple of days, it’s best to check in with your GP.

Here’s what you need to know about Impetigo: https://healthify.nz/health-a-z/s/school-sores

Thinking about buying medicines online? Stay safe and informed before you click buy:

šŸ„ Buy from licensed NZ pharmacies — check Medsafe’s Pharmacy Register to confirm they’re legit.
šŸ“„ Prescription medicines should need a valid NZ prescription — no prescription, no purchase.
🚫 Ignore ads claiming ā€œMedsafe approvedā€ — these are never genuine.
šŸ‘©ā€āš•ļø Not sure about a product? Ask your pharmacist or GP before buying.

āš ļø If you think you’ve received a fake or unsafe medicine, don’t use it. Report it to Medsafe’s compliance team. If you’ve taken something and feel unwell, check for side effects and report a reaction.

🩸Blood cancer doesn’t always make itself known early, but its impact is felt deeply. The most common types of blood cancer are leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

āœ…Symptoms can vary, such as fatigue, bone pain, night sweats, unexplained bruising, or frequent infections. These signs don’t always point to cancer, but they’re worth checking out. A conversation with your doctor could make all the difference.

Let’s keep raising awareness together.

ā˜€ļø Vitamin D plays a quiet but crucial role in your health. It helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which keeps your bones strong, your muscles working properly, and your immune system supported.

šŸŽÆYou get vitamin D from the sun, a few specific foods, and prescribed supplements. But it’s not always easy to get enough, especially during colder months. Low levels often go unnoticed, and over time, they can lead to muscle pain, cramps, and a higher risk of brittle bones or osteoporosis.

🩺If you’re unsure about your vitamin D levels, it’s worth checking in with your GP. A simple test can help you understand where you stand and what steps to take next.

🧠Each September, we come together to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. World Alzheimer’s Month encourages shared learning and collective action to challenge stigma and bring these conversations into the light.

āœ…Dementia progresses over time and looks different for everyone. Some symptoms may be treatable, and early support can make a real difference. Evidence also shows that staying active, eating well, and staying mentally and socially engaged may help reduce the risk. If you or someone close to you is experiencing changes in memory, behaviour, or thinking, it’s worth having a conversation with your GP.

To help you stay informed, here are 10 warning signs to be aware of: alzheimers.org.nz/about-dementia/10-warning-signs

šŸŒ§ļø This winter, give your immune system the boost it needs to help you stay well and fight off those pesky winter bugs.

šŸ’§Keep it simple; wash your hands often, load up on fresh fruit and veggies, go easy on alcohol and smoking, and try to keep your stress under control. If someone’s feeling unwell, a little distance goes a long way too.

āœ…A few good habits can really make a difference. For more ways to strengthen your immunity, check out: https://healthify.nz/hauora-wellbeing/i/immunity-tips-to-strengthen

šŸ’šThis World Breastfeeding Week, we’re shining a light on how breastfeeding supports not just babies and mums but our planet too.

āœ…Breastfeeding helps reduce chronic illness risks, lowers environmental impact, and builds food security from the very start of life. But parents need our support to make it happen. Let’s stand together to create a caring, sustainable world for every family.
