Did you know..."Allied Health, Scientific and Technical" (often shortened to "Allied Health") is a term used to describe over *40* different professions working within the health system. Often when people think of healthcare, they think doctors and nurses - but we're a broader team than that!

And today is International Allied Health Professionals Day - a perfect opportunity to recognise and thank *our* amazing hauora haumi (allied health) duo, Mikayla and Shianne 🎉

In te reo Māori, haumi means ‘alliance’, ‘ally’, and ‘to join’ - and also describes the joints and materials used to combine the various sections of a waka. In our context of the health system, the translation of hauora haumi communicates the indispensable nature of allied health to the health waka and its journey.

So thank you for all your indispensable mahi and the aroha you bring to the team Mikayla and Shianne - you're simply magic at what you do 💚

Two lucky charities will receive $25,000 to support their work serving indigenous communities! As a kaupapa Māori charity who has to raise over 70% of our costs each year, that $25,000 sounds pretty darn amazing 🤩

If you'd like to nominate us all you have to do is -
1️⃣️go to the ORIGINAL post we've linked to here (not just our *shared* post), and
2️⃣nominate us with a tag ( just type ora ) - and comment if you want to

Kei te pēhea te wiki? How's your week going? Have you tried using the Five Ways to Wellbeing to connect with others and fill your cup up together? (Check out just some of the great ideas from Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand - and there's plenty more on their website mentalhealth.org.nz too) 💚

Did you know there are many online resources we can use to help us cope with anxiety, depression, stress and many other pressures that life throws at us. Let's highlight a few:
🫶 Smallsteps.org.nz- This website teaches us tools we can put in our ‘kete’ to help when we are anxious, stressed or feeling down
🫶 Mentalhealth.org.nz/wellbeing-hub – This hub provides practical tips to manage and uplift our mental wellbeing
🫶 Manaaki Ora app – This app can help us to support ourselves and others who may be struggling

Ki te wātea te hinengaro, me te kaha rere o te wairua, ka tāea ngā mea katoa - when the mind is free and the spirit is willing, anything is possible 💚

Thanks Blenheim Sun for the write-up about our team, our mahi, and our vision.
It is truly a labour of love, and we couldn't do it without our amazing wider team (including our partner, Te Piki Oranga) and all those in our hapori who support us 💚

🏆 Celebrating Manu Ora – General Practice of the Year!

We’re proud to celebrate the incredible success of Manu Ora, who have been named General Practice of the Year at the 2025 Primary Health Care Awards | He Tohu Mauri Ora.

Manu Ora is a kaupapa Māori general practice here in Wairau, jointly owned 50:50 by Te Piki Oranga and Nuku Health. In just four years, Manu Ora has grown to serve more than 1,800 patients — nearly half of whom are Māori — proving that kaupapa Māori models of care can thrive and make a real difference for our whānau.

Rangitāne o Wairau played a small but meaningful part in Manu Ora’s beginnings, contributing establishment funding and standing alongside Te Piki Oranga at the opening. We were proud to gift a framed photograph of the Wairau, taken by Keelan Walker, to mark that occasion — a nod to the practice’s location in the old Walker whānau home on Howick Road.

We also acknowledge our partnership connection through Te Piki Oranga, of which Rangitāne is a shareholder, and their significant contribution to establishing and supporting Manu Ora, alongside Dr Rachel Inder and Dr Sara Simmons of Nuku Health.

The current Manu Ora Board reflects that strong partnership, with:

🔸Anne Hobby (Te Piki Oranga GM)
🔸Lauree Ashworth (Rangitāne’s representative on the TPO Board)
🔸Dr Rachel Inder (Nuku Health, Clinical Director)
🔸Dr Sara Simmons (Nuku Health, Clinical Director)
🔸Corey Hebberd (Independent Chair)

He mihi nui ki te whānau o Manu Ora — your achievement is a testament to vision, collaboration, and care grounded in kaupapa Māori values.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini.
Our success is not the work of one, but the strength of many.

Shocktober is all about CPR and learning the 3 steps for life. Many Kiwis suffer from a cardiac arrest each year. It’s important that we learn CPR and what to do in these situations.

Hato Hone St John (along with .co.nz) have designed a ‘3 Steps for Life’ course that teaches CPR and how to use an AED. This a *free* one-hour session in certain locations around the motu - including here in Wairau.

There are two sessions in Blenheim on Thursday 16th October (from 3.00-4.00pm and 5.30-6.30pm). Check out https://events.humanitix.com/shocktober-learn-cpr-for-your-loved-one to book your free tickets now 😊

It’s Mental Health Awareness week and the theme for 2025 is ‘Top up together’. This is to encourage us all to connect with others while we fill our cup using the "Five Ways to Wellbeing" 🫶

1. Me aro tonu /Take notice
2. Tukua / Give
3. Me kori tonu / Be active
4. Me whakawhanaunga / Connect
5. Me ako tonu / Keep learning

There's lots of great ideas for this on the Health Foundation website: www.mentalhealth.org.nz/five-ways-to-wellbeing
Let’s take some time throughout our week to reflect on these steps to improve our wellbeing and connect with others 💚

Did you know? Many people born between 1969 and 2004 in Aotearoa weren't vaccinated against measles. Were *you*?

Measles is doing the rounds again - with outbreaks in Northland and Queenstown right now - and the possibility of spreading all over the motu, including here in Wairau. Measles is a very contagious disease, which can be very serious and even life-threatening 😷🤒

Now's a great time to check if you and your whānau are protected. The vaccine is *free* for many people, including all tamariki (everyone aged 18 years and under).

Have a chat with us today to make sure you're all kei te pai - and help stop measles spreading in our community 💚

In honour of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, here's some facts all you tāne need to know...

In New Zealand, 1 in 8 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. (And sadly Māori men are 72% per cent more likely to die of prostate cancer once they are diagnosed than non-Māori men)

But there is some good news - your chances can be dramatically improved by things like:
🔵Having regular health and prostate checks from at least age 40
🔵Early detection
🔵Early treatment

So, pleeeeease don't be whakamā - have a chat with us today about what's right for you.
