Kei p**a te Wairau – the hole in the clouds over Blenheim – must be letting the spotlight shine through this week! We’re humbled to share that Manu Ora has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious New Zealand Primary Healthcare Awards | He Tohu Mauri Ora 🤩

These awards “celebrate and showcase the best of the best across primary healthcare in Aotearoa.” Organisers noted a “record number of entries” in the 2025 awards, made up of “a treasure trove of innovation, excellence and downright determination.”

Manu Ora has been recognised in the “GenPro General Practice of the Year” category. Judges noted: “This entrant stood out for a service that has been designed with focus on kaupapa Māori, pan-iwi governance, community connection, multidisciplinary comprehensive approach with focus on continuity and impact on both patients and the system. Outstanding.”

Dr Rachel says “We’re *incredibly* humbled to have been named a finalist. But we see this as recognition of the tremendous community collaboration behind this kaupapa. We want to say an enormous thanks to all those who have supported us. We simply couldn’t do it without you” 💚

Winners will be announced at the awards in Auckland on Saturday 6th September. Stay tuned e te whānau...

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year in the first week of August - a time to shine a spotlight on the ongoing support women and babies need from the healthcare system through their breastfeeding journey. This means ensuring every mother has access to the support and information she needs to breastfeed as long as she wishes to do so and creating environments (at home, in healthcare, and at work) that support and empower women.

If you or one of your whānau need some breastfeeding support, please have a korero with one of our team! We're with you māmā 💚

Tēnā koutou e te whānau – Manu Ora has hit another special milestone - four years of serving our Wairau whānau!

"Kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua" (We walk backwards into the future with our eyes fixed on our past too) In te ao Māori the past, the present and the future are intertwined, and days like today are great reminders to reflect!

So, to our whānau (patients), kaimahi (team), supporters, community partners and funders - you are integral to the Manu Ora story. Thank you for your trust, feedback, engagement, strong support and aroha. Ngā mihi nui, tēnā tātou katoa 💚

Ka rawe! Our amazing Dr Sara and Dr Rachel have received one of New Zealand’s highest professional honours in general practice: the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners ‘Community Service Medal’! This is a rare accolade in any GP’s career and we just couldn't be any more proud of them - ka whakamihi ki a kōrua e mana wāhine! 🤩

Though of course they were both extremely quick to point out that the success of Manu Ora is not theirs alone – and express their enormous gratitude to our amazing team at Manu Ora, as well as the vast network of people and organisations generously supporting our mahi (work) 💚

You can read all about this on our website here 👉🏽 https://manuora.org.nz/our-dynamic-duo-honoured

✨ Mānawatia a Matariki mā Puanga - Ngā mihi o te tau hou! ✨ We'll be taking time to honour those we have lost since the last rising of Matariki, celebrate the present and give thanks for what we have, and looking to the future and the promise of a new year 💚

So...our clinic is closed today as we take time to celebrate Matariki. If you need help with your hauora (health) today, here’s how you can reach out…
⚠️ In an emergency always phone 111 ⚠️
Hospitals across the motu will continue to provide critical and emergency care 24/7 as usual.
✅ You can find general health info and advice online at www.info.health.nz and www.healthify.nz (two trusted sites). Low or no data? Visit www.zero.govt.nz and click on the Healthify logo to browse for free.

We're incredibly proud to support the Future of Work conference for local rangatahi (young people)! 💚Here's a beautiful story about how our Dr Sara connected with a student back at the very first Future of Work - and how that panned out 🤩 (Ka rawe Tegan!) We can't wait to help inspire *this* year's cohort of students.

If you have a Year 7-13 student in your whare, bring them down to the Marlborough Events Centre this Wednesday (11th June) from 3.00-6.00pm and come have a kōrero with us and all the others there...who knows where it might lead!

Time to protect yourself and your whānau from flu (rewharewha) this winter!

Did you know flu is a leading cause of hospitalisation and death in Aotearoa. And Māori are 3.6 times more likely to die from the flu than non-Māori 🤧 Getting your flu shot's an easy and effective way to stay strong and protect your whānau 💚

The flu shot is FREE for those who are most vulnerable to becoming very sick if they get the flu. This year, flu vaccines (āraimate rewharewha) are free for lots of people - including:
➡️ wāhine hapū (pregnant women)
➡️ people with underlying health conditions (like heart disease and asthma)
➡️ kaumatua / all those aged 65 years + ..and many other people.

(If you don't meet the criteria for a free flu vaccine, you can also get one of the high-efficacy ones for $50).
Just ask us about options that are available to you.

📞 For pātai (if you want to know more) and bookings, give us a call (03 577 5810) 💚

Recently our Dr Rachel was delighted to catch-up in person again with Funaki Louisale while she was home for the university holidays. Dr Rachel is just so incredibly proud to be working with Funaki as her mentor, while she studies health at University of Otago with the support of the First Foundation.

At Manu Ora we are dedicated to supporting our taiohi (young people) and emerging health practitioners to discover and fulfil their goals in hauora (health). We call this our "plant a seed" approach, and we love to watch all these seeds grow and blossom! Funaki is dedicated to making the world a better place and we feel so privileged to share in her journey - ka rawe! 💚

If you want to know more about this, you can check out this story on our website:

As well as working hard for all our whānau (patients) did you know our kaimahi (team) are ALSO heavily involved in industry initiatives to improve quality and health outcomes in New Zealand?

Our Dr Georgie serves as the Clinical Editor of “HealthPathways”, creating robust, evidence-based medical guidelines for Te Tau Ihu (the top of the South). HealthPathways offers medical professionals and clinicians locally agreed information to make the right decisions together with patients, at the point of care 👍🏾

Here at Manu Ora we're big believers that “me mahi tahi tātou mo te oranga o te katoa” (we should work together for the wellbeing of everyone) 💚

We're deeply saddened with the news that our Māori and Pasifika whānau (patients) will now lose 8 years of vital bowel screening due to recent government funding cuts. "Local Māori and Pasifika will die from this" our Dr Sara explains in the article in this week's Sun. 😢 We are strongly advocating for this decision to be reversed.

Up until now this funding has been used to help save lives through detecting pre-cancerous polyps or finding bowel cancer at an early stage when it is more likely to be successfully treated.

If you want to let the government know your thoughts about this decision, you too can have your voice heard. You can:
☑️write a message to the Health Minister - it is free to post it (no stamp needed!) Just address it to: Hon Simeon Brown, Freepost Parliament, Private Bag 18 888, Parliament Buildings, Wellington 6160 - or email to Simeon.Brown@parliament.govt.nz
☑️contact Marlborough-based MPs, Stuart Smith and Jamie Arbuckle - via email to Stuart.Smith@parliament.govt.nz / Jamie.Arbuckle@parliament.govt.nz - or phone 0800 7273 6282

“Ka whāngaia, ka tupu, ka puāwai” - that which is nurtured grows and blossoms 🌱 That’s why our team are so committed to helping rangatahi as well as young doctors, nurses and health practitioners on their learning journey.

As one part of this, our Dr Sara serves on the Royal New Zealand College of GPs “Hauora Māori Education Team” – helping teach trainee doctors about ‘cultural safety’ and Hauora Māori. Cultural safety makes for better doctors, benefits *all* patients and communities, and helps create better health outcomes 💚
