Duck season has arrived (from the first of May, no less),
But here at Te Awa, there’s something to confess…
Our pond lies still, a peaceful wee nook,
With lilies soon ready to put on a look.

One lonely duck calls it home,
Dreaming of friends who might one day roam.
Surely there’s a spot where real ducks retire -
Good views, calm waters, and snacks they admire?

If they only knew of our peaceful retreat… we’d save them a seat 🦆

The gentle buzz of bumblebees fills the air down by the pond, where they’re happily gathering pollen from the flowering shrubs.

It’s a small but beautiful reminder of nature at work—busy, purposeful, and essential. Bees play a vital role in pollinating the plants that grow our food and sustain our ecosystems.

Take a moment to pause, watch, and appreciate these tiny pollinators doing their important job 🐝🌼

Last night, a group of Te Awa residents enjoyed a delightful outing to the Cambridge Town Hall for the NZ String Quartet’s “Story Telling” performance.

Between the beautiful sounds of Schubert and Britten, the musicians shared the tales behind each piece—bringing the music to life in a whole new way. A wonderful mix of culture, conversation, and a few toe-tapping moments… a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon out! 🎻

Today’s Anzac Service was made especially memorable by our very own centenarian, Gerry Wake, who beautifully recited the Ode. It was a moment that carried both warmth and deep respect, reminding us all of the importance of reflection and remembrance.

A heartfelt thank you to all our residents who took part in the service and helped create a space where stories could be shared and honoured. These moments of connection are truly special.

We closed the gathering in true Anzac spirit—with freshly baked Anzac biscuits and a small nip of whisky—bringing comfort, camaraderie, and a fitting end to a meaningful occasion.

Today at Te Awa, there’s been a quiet kind of busyness in the air. Hands have been full as residents came together to prepare wreaths for tomorrow’s Anzac service.

There’s something special about moments like this - people chatting, sharing stories, and working side by side. Many hands truly do make light work, but more than that, they make meaningful work. Each wreath carefully put together is a small act of remembrance, a way of honouring those who served and sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy today.

While there were smiles along the way, there’s also been a deep sense of respect for what Anzac stands for — courage, sacrifice, and unity.

We look forward to gathering tomorrow at Te Awa to remember, reflect, and stand together.

Lest we forget..

This week at Te Awa, the care dining room was filled with the kind of magic you can’t quite bottle — flour on hands, stories in the air, and just a hint of golden syrup.

Our care residents rolled up their sleeves and got stuck into making Anzac biscuits, proving that some skills are never forgotten… especially the ones that involve butter and sugar! There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about getting your hands into the mix — a simple pleasure that brings back memories.

Of course, all that hard work could only end one way… with warm Anzac biscuits straight from the oven.

Quality control was taken very seriously — and we’re pleased to report they passed with flying colours (and very few leftovers!). 🍪

Things got a little delightfully messy (and very colourful!) in our Care Centre recently with a spot of smudge painting 🎨

We’re not entirely sure who enjoyed it more - the residents or the activity itself - but there was plenty of creativity flowing as colours were blended, smudged, and swirled into some truly unique masterpieces. No rules, no pressure… just a chance to express, experiment, and have a bit of fun along the way.

The end result? Bright, cheerful artwork - and a room full of smiles to match. 💛

There’s been a lovely mix of tradition, friendly competition, and delicious aromas in the air at Te Awa Lifecare with our annual Anzac Biscuit Bake Off 🍪

Held in the lead-up to Anzac Day, this much-loved event honours a simple biscuit with a meaningful history. Anzac biscuits date back to World War I, when they were baked and sent by families to soldiers overseas. Made without eggs, they kept well on the long journey and became a small but heartfelt reminder of home.

Our talented bakers certainly did that tradition proud, with some seriously impressive entries (and a few secret recipes we suspect!). Congratulations to Judy Carmichael (1st), Margaret Goldsmith (2nd), and June Reynolds (3rd) - we don’t envy the judges, it must have been a very tough decision indeed.

A wonderful way to reflect, remember, and of course… enjoy a biscuit or two. 💛

Last week, a group of our residents headed off on a Boon Art Tour in Hamilton Kirikiriroa—and what an adventure it turned out to be! 🎨

The weather may not have quite played ball, but when you’re out exploring colourful corners, larger-than-life murals, and the stories behind them, a few clouds (and the odd drizzle!) don’t really matter.

Boon is all about bringing art to life in the streets—celebrating local artists, sharing stories, and adding a splash of creativity to everyday spaces. And our residents loved every minute of discovering it all.

Because where there is art, there are people—and where there are people, there is life. 💛

A big thank you to resident Doug Arcus for organising a private tour of the new BNZ Theatre – what a marvellous outing it turned out to be!

From the moment we stepped inside, it was clear just how impressive this complex is. There was a real sense of pride seeing pieces of history woven in too, with fittings from the old Hamilton Hotel adding a special touch of nostalgia.

The tour was wonderfully organised (no surprises there, Doug!), and it’s safe to say our residents have come away feeling very excited. With a venue being spoken about in the same breath as the Met in New York and La Scala in Milan – right here in the Hamilton – we’re all looking forward to attending a show before too long.
