Going back to running too soon after giving birth, with no guidance and /or no pelvic floor assessment, could be more harmful than beneficial for your body.

Running is a high impact sport, placing a lot of demand on your body. It is important to give your body the time it needs to heal and regain its strength after having a baby.

Without a strong pelvic floor, exercise can be difficult and uncomfortable. This study shows that 1 in 2 women stopped exercise they had previously participated in due to their pelvic floor symptoms.

Regular physical activity helps improve your overall health, fitness, and quality of life. It also helps reduce your risk of chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, depression and anxiety, and dementia.

It is important to keep on exercising! If you are presenting pelvic floor symptoms that are preventing you from doing that, seek help from your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

It is important that all new mums have a postnatal check with a Pelvic Health Physio after giving birth, whether it was a C-section or vaginal birth. Here are the main reasons as to why:

* A pelvic floor assessment is to determine any potential issues and/or prevent any pelvic floor issues that might affect you later in life. Also, it is essential for women to be given the education and knowledge that they require for their individual recovery.

* Assess stomach muscles for muscle separation or Diastasis Recti. Diastsis Recti occurs during pregnancy when the re**us abdominis muscles, the six-pack ab muscles, separate to give your baby more space to grow. During your postnatal check up, we can teach you to engage your abdominal muscles safely and create a treatment plan with a gradual progression to more challenging exercises.

* Scar management after a C-section. This includes education and scar massage to decrease scar tissue build up and reduce tightness or restriction in movements.

* Guidance and eduction on how to return to exercise safely for pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.

* We also assess and treat all your musculoskeletal issues.

I’d highly recommend a check up, it’s never too late, even 1-3 years postnatal!
