May is Melanoma Awareness Month.

Melanoma is an aggressive skin cancer that can grow silently. It is vital to spot it early before it is too late. Skin checks by qualified specialists (Plastic Surgeons or Dermatologists) can be lifesaving for those who are at risk.

Use this guide to check your skin.

Lest we forget.

May we take a moment to pay respect to those brave Men and Women that made headways in the field of medicine and surgery during the war. This is certainly the case in Plastic Surgery where New Zealanders Gilles and McIndoe made great advances during the World Wars. It is sad that it takes a war to make these advances but a silver lining of a tragic time.

Plastic Surgery:

The word ‘plastic’ in plastic surgery is derived from the Greek word ‘plastikos’ which means to mould or give form. It refers to the way in which one can reshape the tissues of the body to restore form and function. Since its foundation, plastic surgery has encompassed both reconstructive and cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery. Historical evidence of these types of procedures date back more than four thousand years.

Today, the medical specialty of plastic surgery encapsulates a comprehensive and diverse set of subspecialty disciplines. Fully qualified surgeons who perform plastic surgery are known as Specialist Plastic Surgeons. They are integral to the public hospital system, and contribute extensively to the advancement of medical science through research, education and training.

Let’s talk logos.

I have chosen a design that represents my heritage, my practice, and my ethos. A simple design packed full of meaning and purpose.

It is an icon that represents both of my Nationalities: New Zealand with the Koru; and Ireland with the Celtic Tiskele.

The logo features a depiction of The Fibonacci Sequence which represents the Golden Ratio. Like in Plastic Surgery, the fundamentals of these Principals are paralleled, where Mathematics, Science and Art meet.

It is this “Divine Proportion”, found throughout nature from the helix of DNA to the Milky Way, sunflowers to nautilus shells and depicted in human beauty in Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and Vitruvian Man. My interest lies in the connection of aesthetically pleasing principles and the relationship to proportion.

The technical element of the logo represents the planning and the attention to detail that I bring to every case. KM
