🧠💬 Aphasia Awareness Day – 10 April 2026
Today we’re raising awareness of aphasia – a communication disability that affects a person’s ability to speak, understand, read or write - often following a stroke or brain injury.
In Aotearoa, around 29,000 people are living with aphasia, and every day more people acquire it – yet awareness remains low.
Aphasia does not affect intelligence – people still know what they want to say, but may find it hard to get the words out or understand others.
💡 Simple ways you can support someone with aphasia:
• Speak clearly and give them time to respond
• Reduce background noise
• Use gestures, writing, or pictures to help communication
• Be patient and keep conversations respectful and inclusive
Days like this help bring people together – to share experiences, learn strategies, and reduce isolation. Let’s build more understanding, more patience, and more connection in our communities.
Aphasia NZ have offices throughout New Zealand. In Ōtautahi Christchurch, this is in the BrainTree building we share.
