Come along next week to the next Specialist Dementia Education Series event - Driving.

Wednesday 6 August
1:30-3pm.

Although a diagnosis of dementia does not mean an automatic driver license suspension in New Zealand, (as it does in some countries), dementia can indeed impact on driving safety. Julie Mills and Samantha Haley of the Burwood Driving Assessment Service discuss how driving fitness is evaluated in a person with dementia.

Registration is required as space is limited. If you can no longer attend, please let us know. This helps us offer your place to someone else. Thank you for your understanding.

“It’s a couple’s diagnosis, it’s not just the person who’s been diagnosed. My husband was in denial for a long time and still occasionally is.”

Lyn’s husband Michael was diagnosed with dementia five years ago, and still enjoys spending time with family and friends.

As his dementia has progressed, he and Lyn have made sure that social visits continue to be a positive experience for everyone.

“He still gets pleasure out of seeing our friends and family, and going to their homes, but I find that he gets tired very easily now whereas he used to be able to sit and chat and play games,” Lyn said.

“There’s one game that he absolutely loves, Rummikub, we’ve been playing it for donkey’s years, we still play with friends and he really enjoys that.”

🙏Thanks to Camellia Court and Albarosa Rest Home for their recent fundraising efforts to help support the Mahi of Dementia Canterbury.

🎩Camellia Court held a black and red afternoon tea with lots of dressing up and fun. Just over $1,000 was raised with the combined efforts ❤️.

At one of Dementia Canterbury’s Younger Onset Saturday Socials, clients and care-partners enjoyed a guided tour at the Airforce Museum of New Zealand.

Our guides took us behind the scenes to learn about the history of the Base, alongside enjoying the reserve collection and Conservation Workshop. Ending with a guided walk-through of a Bristol Freighter transport aircraft.

Social connection and enjoyment continued over a cuppa in the café.

This week, younger onset clients enjoyed the view over Christchurch at the Sign of the Takahe. Despite the layer of fog over Christchurch, there were beautiful vistas from the sea to the mountains. A coffee in the lovely garden of this historic treasure followed.

Great news from the West Coast! 🌿 With more and more referrals coming in from Hokitika and the wider Westland area, we’ve kicked off a new Café Connection group right in the heart of Hokitika.

Each week, 8–12 of us gather at Thatcher & Small to enjoy good coffee, great company, and some delicious treats. Conversations flow easily — from West Coast history and local music to gardening, community events, and what everyone’s been up to lately.

It’s a warm, relaxed way to connect — and we’d love to see it continue growing! ☕🧁
