Not all feeding challenges start with the food.
For some children, underlying gut discomfort such as reflux, constipation, bloating, or other gastrointestinal issues can make eating feel uncomfortable or even painful. Over time, children may start to avoid foods, eat very small amounts, or limit their diet to foods that feel “safe.”
What can look like picky eating can sometimes be a child protecting themselves from discomfort.
When supporting children with feeding difficulties, it’s important to consider the whole system - including gut health, sensory processing, interoception, and the child’s past experiences with food.
Understanding why a child might be struggling is often the first step toward meaningful support.
