The Tree Pose in Chair Yoga is a fabulous sequence for strength and balance. 🌴

👉 Tip: Use the chair if you need support, or keep the ball of your foot on the ground.

You can feel the same sense of balance and lift whether your foot is on the floor, on your calf or higher. To test yourself further, raise one or both arms.

Tree Pose helps build leg strength, improve balance, and encourage focus and steady breathing. Even in a chair, it reminds us to feel grounded while growing tall.

As the leading provider of Retirement Village Yoga, we understand how to customise yoga to be accessible to all. Our main public class is on Friday, 10.15 am at the Water Studio within the Flow Wellbeing Centre.

Last November, I was fortunate enough to spend a beautiful week in Rarotonga, moving and breathing beside the ocean. 🌊

There’s something very special about practising yoga outdoors.

A couple of beach yoga learnings…

You don’t actually need a mat — the sand works just fine 🏝️

Although it’s not quite as easy as it looks! Soft sand definitely keeps your balance honest (LOL) 😅

What I loved most was the gentleness of the sand beneath you and the warmth of the environment around you ☀️ Practising outside like this reminds you how connected yoga can feel to nature.

One thing I’m very aware of now is that practising yoga in a mature body isn’t the same as practising in a younger one — and that’s actually a beautiful thing.

It’s why I love Hansa Yoga. We practise within our own mobility and functionality, meeting the body where it is. The shapes might look a little different, but the feeling and the benefits are still very much the same.

Arrow into Aeroplane ✨

From strong and grounded in Arrow… to steady and lifted in Aeroplane.

This transition builds leg strength, improves balance, and supports focus, all with the reassurance of the chair.

Chair Yoga is not only seated, but we also explore standing sequences with the support of the chair if required. Chair availability gives choice when moving and support with balance. We love this sequence as it builds strength, balance and mobility.

Classes are suitable for people who are recovering from injury or surgery, and of course, an older demographic.

Chair yoga isn’t about staying still. It’s about learning how to move well.

One thing we practice in our Hañsa Chair Yoga sessions is sit bone movement. Those two points under your pelvis are the foundation for how you sit, stand, and walk.

As we age, it’s common to lose awareness here. We collapse, grip, or hold tension without realising it. Over time, that can affect balance, posture, hip mobility, and even how confident we feel getting up and down.

Gentle sit bone movements help:
• improve pelvic awareness
• support better posture
• keep the hips and lower spine mobile
• make everyday movements feel easier and safer

Small, slow movements done with attention can make a big difference. Especially when they’re accessible, supported, and done at your own pace.

This is why chair yoga matters. It meets your body where it’s at, and helps you keep moving with more ease and confidence. 🪑✨

At the end of every chair yoga class, we pause. 🙏

Observation Savasana is a guided moment of stillness where we mentally walk back through the movements we’ve just completed. There’s no physical effort here. The body is supported, the breath is natural, and the focus shifts inward.

This reflective pause helps connect movement with awareness. By quietly noticing sensations, areas of ease or effort, and how the body feels after moving, we can better understand what supports us and what doesn’t. It’s also a chance for the nervous system to settle and for the effects of the practice to fully land.

In chair yoga, this moment can be just as important as the movement itself. 🪑

We don’t rush from one thing to the next.

We move with intention, then we take time to notice.

🪑 Boost Your Chair Yoga with Calf Raise Sequences 🦶

Did you know that adding calf-raise variations into your chair yoga practice can significantly improve balance, strength, and circulation? These simple movements support everyday mobility and contribute to long-term fall prevention.

✅ Why Calf Raises Matter
Strong calves help stabilise the ankles, improving balance and coordination.
Calf muscles act as a powerful “second heart,” supporting healthy circulation.
Better ankle mobility and lower-leg strength make walking, turning, and standing easier and safer.
They’re accessible, low-impact, and easy to weave into both seated and standing sequences.

🧘‍♀️ How We Use Them

We use seated heel lifts to build strength and boost circulation — and standing calf raises with the chair for support to safely challenge balance and ankle stability.
Strong calves = better mobility, improved balance, and long-term fall prevention.
Simple, effective, and accessible for every body.

✨ Lift, pause, test balance, lower with control — your “second heart” will thank you.

💪 Why Arm Strength Matters as We Age

As we move through life, maintaining strength in our arms and shoulders becomes more than a fitness goal — it’s essential for independence, confidence, and everyday mobility.

Strong arms support the simple tasks that help us stay active and connected to daily life, like:

🌿 Hanging out the laundry
🧺 Lifting groceries
🗄️ Reaching for items in cupboards
🚪 Opening doors
🧳 Carrying bags or personal belongings

But it’s not just strength — it’s mobility.

Healthy shoulder movement allows us to reach, rotate, lift, and stabilise. Without it, even everyday activities can feel heavy or limited over time.

🧘‍♀️ How We Support This in Class

In our chair yoga and therapeutic movement sessions, we include gentle arm and shoulder-strengthening sequences designed to:

–Improve range of motion
–Support posture
–Build functional strength
–Reduce stiffness
–Enhance confidence in daily tasks

And for anyone with shoulder mobility restrictions, don't worry — modifications are always offered. Every body is supported with safe, accessible variations that meet you exactly where you are.

✨ Why It Matters

When we keep the upper body strong and mobile, we protect our independence, reduce the risk of injury, and make life’s daily movements feel lighter.
Stronger arms = a more capable, confident you — for today, and for years to come. 💛

Slow, steady, and soothing.

In this part of our Hañsa Chair Yoga class, we move through a gentle arm raise — lifting the arms with the breath, and lowering them back down with ease. It’s a simple movement that integrates breath with movement, helps release tension, improves shoulder function and pelvis through spine movement, and creates a quiet sense of flow.

These mindful, meditative moments are what make Chair Yoga so special — accessible for everyone and deeply grounding for the body and mind.

We love sharing these sessions with retirement village communities around Christchurch, and corporate chair yoga supporting clients to move and feel well.

A moment to pause.

A breath to begin.

This is how every Hañsa Chair Yoga class starts — gently, mindfully, together. 🌿

In this class at a local retirement village, we begin by settling in with the breath. These quiet moments help residents reconnect with their bodies, calm the mind, and prepare for gentle movement.

Chair Yoga is designed to be safe and accessible for all ages and abilities. It helps improve mobility, balance, and confidence, while creating space for relaxation and connection.

We love sharing Hañsa Chair Yoga with retirement village communities across Christchurch and seeing how much joy and ease it brings.

If you’d like to bring Chair Yoga to your village or community, we’d love to hear from you. 💛
