We can’t believe it’s almost time to start noticing signs of ngahuru already 🍂🌿

As the seasons begin to shift, it can be a beautiful opportunity to slow down with tamariki and notice what’s changing in the world around them. Taking time to observe nature supports curiosity, connection, and emotional regulation.

You might invite them to notice:
• What colours are changing in the trees or plants
• What feels different in the air, temperature, or light
• What sounds they can hear outside at this time of year
• How their own energy, body, or mood feels as the seasons shift

Short outdoor check-ins, nature walks, or even a few quiet minutes observing the playground or school garden can help tamariki reconnect, reset, and regulate. These small moments build awareness, grounding, and a deeper connection to te taiao and the changing rhythms around us.

Are you looking for a meaningful way to help ground tamariki after big feelings, big days, or to bring back a sense of calm in the classroom? We love this Youtube video from Wildling Books 💚

This beautiful guided breathing video from Wildling Books offers a gentle moment to slow things down. Tamariki are guided through simple belly breathing, breathing in peace and breathing out worries.

An easy tool you can return to again and again, whether in the classroom or shared with whānau to practice at home.

As the term begins, this is a beautiful time to gently build gratitude and calm into everyday routines.
Through movement-based mindfulness like Manu of a Feather and reflective practices such as our Gratitude Rākau, tamariki are supported to feel settled, connected, and emotionally aware. Simple moments of noticing, moving together, and reflecting can become powerful wellbeing routines that support focus, regulation, and a sense of belonging.

Looking for a simple but meaningful activity for your ākonga? Tatai Whakapapa helps tamariki see how they’re all connected, growing compassion and understanding for one another. It’s a great way to bring Te Tiriti o Waitangi to life in your classroom, all while showing that even our differences link us together.

Are you a primary school kaiako looking for a meaningful way to explore Te Tiriti o Waitangi with your ākonga?
Link in bio or : https://www.manahau.nz/activities/exploring-te-tiriti-o-waitangi

Te Tiriti o Waitangi invites us to think about relationships, responsibility, and how we live together in Aotearoa.

In the classroom, this can begin with simple, meaningful kōrero. Caring for one another, recognising our connections, reflecting on those who came before us, and considering the role we each play for generations to come.

By exploring Te Tiriti in age-appropriate ways, tamariki are supported to see themselves as part of a shared story, connected to their communities, each other, and the whenua.

These conversations help bring Te Tiriti to life, not as a moment in history, but as something we live and practice every day.

The start of a new school year can carry many emotions. Hope, excitement, nerves, responsibility, and the quiet weight of all that sits behind the scenes. There is joy in reconnecting and beginning again, alongside uncertainty and the mental load that comes with holding space for others.

As you open your classrooms and welcome your learners, we want to acknowledge everything you bring with you. The care, the intention, the emotional labour, and the steady presence that helps create places where people feel safe, valued, and able to belong.

Ngā mihi nui for all that you carry into this year. We are grateful to walk alongside you as the year unfolds💚

Here's what you can expect from the tīma at Manahau this year. Our focus is on supporting kaiako mā, tamariki, and whānau in ways that make a real difference. This includes simple classroom activity ideas and wellbeing tools, report writing tips, and resources with a mātauranga Māori lens.

The purpose behind all of this is to give kaiako mā practical, easy-to-use strategies that help tamariki feel connected, regulated, and ready to learn, while also supporting you as educators to feel seen, valued, and equipped for the mahi you do every day.

We’re excited to share these resources with you and hope they make your teaching journey a little bit easier and a lot more rewarding 💛

Looking for an activity that supports introductions at the start of the year? As the new school year begins, Ko au tēnei is a simple activity to support introductions and relationship building in the classroom. Tamariki are invited to reflect on who supports them to be themselves and the places where they feel good, safe, and settled. This gives kaiako meaningful insight into who their ākonga are and what matters to them.

We have also created a kaiako version of this worksheet to support introductions with whānau. It can be shared digitally or printed and sent home, creating an easy way to open kōrero and build connection early in the year. Small reflective activities like this help lay strong foundations for trust, belonging, and wellbeing in our learning spaces 🩵
