Do you have any spaces in your life where you are not judged and can be accepting of who you are deep down? This is the special part of mindfulness - it is not so much trying to learn something new - it is remembering how to JUST BE. Mindfulness is by invitation only and you will not be questioned or judged for how you feel about anything. If you have a teen in your life - they are free to pop into any of these Tuesday night classes this term - first trial class free cause no pressure here! I love this photo of Pippin practicing last night - the cheeky grin is cause he caught me taking the photo - he is not in a specific "yoga asana" - it is just Pip playing with stretching out and not being symmetrical or confined to his mat. That's our theme this week - exploring the wild side with care, intelligence and open minds. In the words of Brené Brown: "Strong Back, Soft Front, Wild Heart". I reckon Pippin is the living embodiment of these words in practice and in life - we have weathered many storms together and remain committed to our lives together as creatives. 19 years married and counting (though he may dispute that when I share this photo LOL)

As we move towards backbends and twists, here is this week's inspiration for practice!
"Learn to speak with both your mind and heart.
For the ground beneath will hold you, dear --
know that you are free.
And never grow a wishbone, daughter,
where your backbone ought to be."
For My Daughter

Mindfulness is a call to action.
"Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?"

Dear teenage self.... life is going so fast, you have so many dreams, you have so many responsibilities, and there is so much you can't control. Remember to take a breath and reconnect to what is important to you. There are things you are doing already that qualify as "mindfulness" - it is there in those times when you feel "in the zone", it is there when you feel deeply connected to another being, it is there when get lost in a piece of music or art. Come learn life skills and be the best person you can be. Thanks Wildcrafted for hosting! https://www.yogawitherica.nz/mindfulness-for-teens

What I LOVE about this picture of Jane - is that she didn’t even know how far she was backbending until I showed her the photo. I guess it didn’t feel like a difficult pose for her - and yet look at how gorgeous her backward extension is. Jane has worked quietly, consistently and with intelligence during her years of yoga classes. She inspires me to explore what I might achieve with such centred commitment in all areas of my life. So today in yoga practice we explored the “middle way”. Making just enough of an effort for energy to flow through our entire body. Sometimes “trying too hard” leaves us feeling exhausted both mentally and physically. The body and mind egg each other on to do more and go harder. That striving in our mind and body become a hardened neural pathway in the brain that we can get stuck in. What if we practised this middle way instead? Just enough effort to get things done well. This could become a new neural pathway - one that transcends our yoga and mindfulness practice into everyday life. Perhaps then we could do our mahi without an extra dollop of frenzy, anxiety and burnout. Perhaps then we could achieve great things while still experiencing ease, peace and enjoyment. So many opportunities to practice this coming up check out https://www.yogawitherica.nz/yoga for bookings. 🙏 ❤️

A moment of kindness overheard at Hansen Park... a young woman with a little puppy apologised to a woman who the puppy wanted to jump up on: "I am so sorry, he is a puppy and still figuring things out". The women replied with a smile "that's ok, I am 72 years old and I am still just figuring things out". As I meditate upon compassion for each other and ourselves, I will keep this wisdom in mind. No matter how hard I try, no matter how long I live, I will forever just be "figuring things out".

I am feeling deeply thankful for our community of yogis. Through my tough time with covid, I was heartened by your kind words and humbled by your reminder for me to practice what I teach. I truly felt very low in body and mind. It served as a reminder to me that we all suffer in small and big ways and that we can get through those tough times together. Looking forward to returning the kindness in the form of some challenging but kind yoga classes coming your way! 😉Bookings are open again https://www.yogawitherica.nz/schedule 🙏 Arohanui to you all. ❤️
