🌍🐋 World Fisheries Day — Honouring the Ocean, Protecting the Whales

Today, on World Fisheries Day, we’re reminded of how deeply connected we are to the ocean — and how the choices we make ripple far beyond the shoreline.

For whales, sustainable fisheries aren’t just a nice-to-have. They are essential.

Healthy fish populations mean healthy ecosystems. They support the krill, schooling fish, and complex food webs that whales rely on. Overfishing, bycatch, and ecosystem decline don’t just impact human communities — they directly affect the giants who keep our ocean in balance.

At we.are.tohorā, we stand for a world where:

✨ Ocean abundance is restored
✨ Whales can thrive as the architects of healthy seas

On this day, we acknowledge the fishers, scientists, Indigenous leaders, and conservationists working toward truly sustainable, regenerative fisheries — practices that honour both ocean livelihoods and ocean life.

Because when fisheries thrive sustainably, whales thrive too.
And when whales thrive, the whole planet breathes a little easier.

Let’s choose ocean stewardship — today and every day.

Successful Whale Rescue off Kaikōura 🐋
The has freed a humpback whale that became entangled in a crayfish pot line south of Kaikōura on Tuesday.

After the whale was first reported that afternoon, DOC’s large whale disentanglement team of staff and trained volunteers searched the area but couldn’t locate it before nightfall. They returned early Wednesday morning and successfully released the whale.

The whale had been trapped for more than 18 hours — exhausted but thankfully appearing healthy. DOC is asking boaters in the area to give it space to rest and recover.

DOC South Marlborough Operations Manager Stacey Wren thanked the wildlife watching tour operators who helped by reporting the whale’s location, and Ngāti Kurī for their support and strong connection with the whales of the region.

She also reminded the public:

“Please never attempt to free a whale yourself — it’s extremely dangerous. If you spot an entangled whale, call 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) immediately.”

Craypot line entanglements mainly affect humpback whales due to their curious nature and large flippers. DOC advises fishers to reduce risks by minimising slack in lines and avoiding setting pots during peak migration months (June–July).

Huge appreciation to the DOC team and volunteers for their expertise, compassion, and dedication to protecting Aotearoa’s whales. 💙🌊

The Department of Conservation (DOC) has successfully freed a humpback whale that was entangled in a crayfish pot line south of Kaikōura.

The entanglement was first reported on Tuesday afternoon, prompting DOC’s large whale disentanglement team to respond. Although the team was unable to locate the whale that day, they resumed their efforts early Wednesday morning and managed to release it successfully.

The whale had been trapped for over 18 hours and is expected to be very fatigued, though it appeared to be in good health otherwise.
