A ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟ ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ: Mʏ ʙᴀᴛᴛʟᴇ ᴡɪᴛʜ PMR ᴀɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄʜᴀʟʟᴇɴɢᴇ ᴀʜᴇᴀᴅ💪✨

Many of you know that at the beginning of the year, I was diagnosed with an 𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒐𝒊𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒆 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆—polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). It hit me hard. I could barely get out of a chair, getting off the loo was excruciatingly painful, and something as simple as putting on underwear or doing up my bra felt nearly impossible. Even washing my hair was a struggle. 🪑😣 I won’t go into all the details, but lifting my legs and arms became a painful challenge. 🦵🖐️

As someone who’s always leaned toward 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔, it was a tough pill to swallow—literally. 💊 But the pain was so debilitating that I turned to medication, and thankfully, it eased the agony. THEN, I embarked on a massive learning curve 📚 about the disease and how to manage it without steroids (because they really mess with your body). 𝑰 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊-𝒊𝒏𝒇𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒕 🥦, and that was in February.

I wish I could tell you I’m now steroid-free and pain-free, but here’s the truth: following a strict anti-inflammatory diet is difficult, even for the most dedicated. 𝑆𝑜 𝑡𝑜𝑑𝑎𝑦, 𝐼’𝑚 𝑎𝑑𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑦 95% 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑, 5% 𝑓𝑙𝑒𝑥𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑡 ℎ𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑙𝑖𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 80% 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 20% 𝑓𝑙𝑒𝑥𝑖𝑏𝑙𝑒—𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐼’𝑚 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑦 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑛 𝑙𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑠. 😔

𝐈’𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲. 🌿 𝐴𝑛𝑑 𝐼’𝑑 𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡𝑜 𝑗𝑜𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑒. When Jenni first walked through my door, her focus was solely on losing weight. She was morbidly obese, drained of energy 😞, and struggling with constant reflux 🤢, along with bouts of diarrhea and constipation 🚽. But the physical symptoms were only part of the story—emotionally, Jenni was in a dark place. Her self-esteem was at rock bottom, and she felt trapped in a cycle of anger and depression 😔.

As I listened to Jenni describe her typical day of eating, the root of her issues became clear. Her mornings began with no breakfast at all, followed by a lunch that consisted of a cooked meal—usually sausages or chicken with some vegetables 🍗🥦. But the rest of her day was a blur of lollies, chocolate, cakes, and biscuits 🍬🍫🍰, fueling her with quick bursts of sugar but leaving her body and mind in a state of disarray.

What Jenni didn’t realize was that within her gut, there were billions of bacteria working—both for and against her health 🦠. This gut microbiota, a complex community of microorganisms, plays a crucial role in extracting energy from our food 🍽️, as well as in manufacturing neurotransmitters, enzymes, and vitamins.
