YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Humans exist in a symbiotic relationship with a wide range of microorganisms, 38 Trillion living in and on our bodies! Over 1000 species of bacteria, viruses and more have been identified so far.
When we are born we are ‘colonised’ by our mother’s microbiome, and then by the environment around us and things we ingest, food we eat and way we live.
If our mothers microbiome was diverse and prolific, then we had a good diet and minimal chemical and stress exposure, then our bodies would be hosting a happy healthy microbiome. This protects us from a huge range of diseases.
But for most of us, your microbiome could do with a healthy boost, then follow these simple steps to boost your good bacteria;
1. Eat a WIDE range of spray free fruits, vegetables and other plant foods. The more you eat of veggies and fruits as well as legumes and other healthy plant based foods, the bigger the range of bacteria are introduced – plus, the fibre from all these goodies, feeds your bacteria (which is called prebiotics). Studies have shown that this alone can make a huge improvement.
2. Getting into nature, walk barefoot outdoors, do some gardening, spend time with animals.
3. Eat fermented foods. Fermented vegetables are very cheap and easy to make (recipe for sauerkraut in next post).
4. Improve sleep quality and relieve stress – deep breathing and exercise are great ways to do this.
5. Exercise has been shown alone to increase diversity in our microbiome.
6. Of course Probiotics, but, you need a healthy environment for these to live in and thrive. There are many types of probiotics, suitable for different parts of the digestive system.
