This is usually the time of year I step back a little - from social media, from screens, and from the general noise - and give myself space to begin the year gently. I really value starting the new year low-tech, with fewer distractions and more room to focus on what matters most: time with family and friends, and reflecting on where I’d like to take The Apothecary in 2026.

I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supports the store and clinic, and who follows along here. Your trust, curiosity and ongoing support mean more than I can ever properly put into words, The Apothecary truly only exists because of this wonderful community.

I’ll be back online towards the end of January, and when I am, I’ll be running a special giveaway as a little thank you - it’s a good one.

In the meantime, the store and clinic remain open right through January, so please drop in and say hello, or order online if that suits you better. We’re here whenever you need us.

If you’re choosing to drink over the holidays, then our 'The Hangover' tonic is a gentle herbal support to keep in mind.

Tonic herbs have long been used in herbal medicine to support liver function during times when it’s under more pressure. These herbs are often described as both hepatoprotective and restorative, meaning they’re used to help protect liver cells and support the body’s natural detoxification pathways and overall resilience.

This tonic is best used before drinking and again before going to sleep, but it can also be a supportive option afterwards if you’re looking to gently care for your liver.

I know many of you will be out in the wild at this time of year - tramping, camping, swimming in rivers and sleeping under the stars. You’re an intrepid, nature-loving bunch after all. So I thought now was the perfect moment to mention that we’re fully stocked with natural insect repellent options that actually work.

A quick word on why this matters. Many conventional insect repellents rely on synthetic chemicals like DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide). While effective, they can be irritating to skin, disruptive to hormones, and harsh on the nervous system - particularly for children and anyone using them repeatedly over long days outdoors. They’re also not especially kind to waterways or the wider environment you’re heading out to enjoy.

Our natural repellents work differently. They use carefully balanced blends of essential oils - citronella, lemon eucalyptus, lavender, cedarwood and tea tree - which insects dislike, but our bodies tolerate far better. These oils interfere with insects’ ability to locate you, rather than overwhelming your system with a neurotoxin.
