We hope you enjoy these photos from around our home as we prepared for and celebrated Christmas. Residents helped us set up our home; putting up trees, decorating, and gift wrapping.

Prior to Christmas, we also enjoyed a visit from students from Sacred Heart School who came to sing carols for us, and brought beautiful handmade cards for our residents.

On Christmas Day, we enjoyed a fun visit from Santa!

We recently marked National Awareness Week for Diversional and Recreational Therapy. This year’s theme was He Kākano, He Tipu – From Seed to Growth.

"Growth happens through care, nurture, and connection. Just as a seed needs soil, water, and sunlight, people flourish when they are supported with creativity, empathy, and companionship.” (Society of Diversional and Recreational Therapists)

Our activities team’s vital work helps our residents to feel good. It enhances their quality of life by building connection, bringing a sense of belonging and purpose, and helping to keep minds and bodies active.

We recently held a cultural diversity celebration at Avonlea! We shared a Filipino song, cultural dance from both Fiji and the Philippines, and a cultural quiz. We enjoyed quite a bit of discussion about the flags and countries that residents and team members hail from. Some family members also shared their culture. They sang for us, did a haka and poi dancing. Team members sang the waiata 'Te Taukaea Aroha', with Fitz accompanying us on the guitar. Finally we enjoyed kai together.
