Had the wonderful opportunity to be one of the presenters at Rasing Neurodiverse Kids run by Youth Alive Trust and Mana Ake. It was just brilliant to see so many parents there especially on a cold winter's night.

Must admit, I thought originally I was going to speak to about 30-40 people and the numbers got up to nearly 200. The heart was beating slightly fast..........

The results of our group baking delivered to Full Bellies Charity ( charity voted for by our group members)

Baking is such a great activity to do as a group, providing lots of opportunities for working together and connecting. Such yummy results - our bakers did get a chance to sample their hard work before the rest went to charity!

Socially Speaking is embarking on a new adventure in 2024. We have moved out of offices in Bishopdale and are now basing ourselves in a number of places in the community including Seabrook McKenzie Centre and the Loop Youth Centre (Papanui Youth Development Trust).

We believe it's crucial to be part of a positive and vibrant youth community, tapping into the fantastic resources available and working closely with other community groups, professionals and families.

At Socially Speaking we incorporate a wholistic approach using a simplified version of the Maori Health Framework – Te Whare Tap Wha (developed by Professor Mason Durie)

All young adult group members and staff had the opportunity last term to be involved in a range of leisure activities - many outside our comfort zones! Using the four pillars of Te Whare Tap Wha, we had the opportunity to be involved in a range of leisure activities - many outside out comfort zones but with such positive outcomes.

Taha Tinana (Physical well-being) Encouraging fun movement activities
Taha Whanau (Family/Social wellbeing) Establishing positive social connections
Taha Henengaro (Mental and Emotional) Experiencing activities that give us pleasure
Taha Wairua (Spiritual) Challenging ourselves to set and work through achieveable goals

Young Womens’ Yoga and Friendship group.
‘Stand Tall and Breathe’

We are excited that in 2022 we will be running a six week programme for Young Women (16-25) targeting wellbeing and increased movement habits. This has been made possible with subsidised funding from Sport Canterbury.

The programme is named – Stand tall and breathe. It aims to raise awareness of how wellbeing is influenced by body awareness through optimal posture and breathing. The programme will be led by Yoga Instructor Tania Gibson with the support of a Socially Speaking therapist. Tania has extensive experience in programming with young people and always delivers highly engaging, fun and safe experiences for participants. You can see more information on Tania’s work at https://www.stretchme.co.nz/

The programme will consist of a meet and greet, warm-up, breathing techniques, yoga poses, music, discussion around postural and sensory awareness and conclude with a drink and snack.
Participants flexibility, heartrates and mood will be ascertained pre and post programme so we can report the programmes success!

The cost per participant is $10 pp running Thursdays 5.15-6.15pm for 6 weeks in term 1, 2022 running 24th February-31st March. (maximum number 10 participants)

Did you know if you put your arms around a tree and can't touch your hands together it's more than 500 years old?

I was so lucky last week to be away from the world of wifi and covid, surrounded by such beauty on Stewart Island. Had a spot of tree bathing which is a Japanese practice of relaxation; known in as shinrin yoku.

But now back to work, Socially Speaking is fully open and looking forward to seeing our lovely families!!
