Communicate Speech Language Therapy

Communicate Speech Language Therapy Specialised assessment and intervention to help adults and children who have difficulty with communication (speech, language, fluency, voice, etc).

I have 20 years experience as a Speech Language Therapist, working both with adults and children. I got my degree (with honours) from the University of Canterbury and began my working career in a busy tertiary hospital. I then travelled and worked in a variety of spots around the UK, before returning to NZ. I have been based in Central Otago for 15 years and have worked in the community with adult

s and children who need communication support for a wide range of needs. I help kids who can't speak clearly, or who have a stutter, or can't express themselves well, or don't have strong social skills, or who have difficulty with literacy. I help adults who have had a concussion or brain injury, who have had a stroke or have a neurological disease or have a stutter. These individuals benefit from therapy to help them speak clearly, to get their words out and their meaning across, to be able to understand what people say to them, to be able to read and write and engage in conversations and social activity. My therapy is client centred, strengths based, goal oriented and outcome focussed. Success is achieved when clients goals are meaningful to them, and include the people in their lives whom they communicate with. I am a people person and love to help. I am kind and empathetic. I am creative yet analytical. I am reliable, honest and trustworthy. I love learning and love seeing other people progress and work towards their potential.

It's Speech Language Therapy Awareness Week. Here's what I do each day as an SLT:

-I help people who have had a brain injury to be able to return to school, work and play. I do therapy to help them to talk, think, understand, learn, remember. I work with their families, school, workplace to support them with whatever it is they do. I have clients who are only a few months old, preschoolers, school age, as well as adults. I work very closely in a team with other therapists.

-I help people in hospital who have had a stroke, dementia, brain injury or other neurological problem so that they can communciate their immedicate needs and wants, and so they can eat and drink safely. I work closely with the medical and allied health team as well as family and caregivers.

-I also help children and adults who have speech and langauge difficulties and would like to be able to communicate better with people in their lives. They may have a stutter, talk too fast, have a voice problem, can't say certain sounds, have difficulties learning to read, or they may wish to improve their accent so kiwis understand them.

I love what I do. I meet the MOST wonderful people who welcome me into their lives, place trust in me and are just so incredibly inspiring.

Thank you to all my past, current and future clients. I learn SOOO much from you and feel grateful for how you always keep me learning.

I truly hope everyone is doing ok right now. I am continuing to see some current clients for therapy online during this period of lockdown. However I have a growing list of clients to see after restrictions lift. I feel that initial assessments are best in person, so don't hesitate to be in touch if you wish to discuss an initial assessment session in the future.
