"She knew, even as a girl, that this was what she wanted to do."

Nina always knew from a young age, she felt drawn to caring for people at the end of life - to being the steady presence in a room when everything else felt uncertain.
It wasn't morbid. It was a calling she couldn't quite explain, but couldn't ignore either.

Life came first, the way it does. She lived it fully - made mistakes, grew, learned things about herself that no training could have taught her. And when the time was right, she found her way to the work she'd always known was hers.

That was over ten years ago.

Now, with more than a decade of experience sitting with families on their hardest days, Nina brings something rare to Simplicity - the depth of someone who chose this work twice.

"Once as a girl, and once as a woman who'd already lived enough to understand why it matters".

She's not here to project manage your grief. She's here to walk alongside you through it.

Dear Team Simplicity 🐾🐾

Did you hear about the big storm, and all the rain? ⛈️ Well, mum did, and so we got all our walks in earlier in the week, so today (no storm, just rain and grey) we could go for a little sniff up and down the road, and then spent the rest of the day in the best way possible: with snack food and good company and a trashy movie and naps. I did get a bit annoyed when mum woke me because I was snoring so loud that she could not hear what the movie people were saying. I think she made that up, but found a different sleeping position anyway. That’s how much I love her. ❤️

All my love to you too,
Belle

Losing someone is hard enough without worrying about money.

What many Christchurch families don't know is that there are several financial assistance options that can help:

✔ Work and Income (MSD) Funeral Grant
✔ ACC (in eligible cases)
✔ Mayor's Welfare Grant (Christchurch residents)
✔ Veterans Affairs assistance

You don't have to carry this alone.

If cost is a concern — please reach out before you assume you can't afford a meaningful farewell. We'll walk you through every option available to you.

We've heard everything. Classic hymns. ABBA. Bohemian Rhapsody. One family chose the theme from The Lion King.

And you know what? Every single one was perfect. Because it was them.

At Simplicity, we believe a farewell should sound like the person it's celebrating.

Drop your song in the comments — we'd love to know. 👇

And if you've been putting off having the conversation about what you'd actually want... that's what we're here for. No pressure. Just a chat.

Jamie Harvey didn't plan on this career.

After two people he loved died. And in the middle of that grief, he found himself watching funeral directors work - and realising this was a calling, not just a job.

More than a decade later, Jamie leads our team here in Christchurch. He's a husband, a South Islander, and someone who has sat with hundreds of families on their hardest day.

What does he wish everyone knew?

"You don't have to have it together when you call us. That's what we're here for."

If you're facing a loss — or just want to understand your options — Jamie and the team are here.

Dear Team Simplicity 🐾🐾

Charlene just came to visit for a manicure/pedicure. And she even brought special treats. Must be a really great weekend for hoomans, because mum got me a special treat too as a present. Something about a bunny bringing it, but I didn’t smell one in the house, so I might have heard that wrong. Anyway, I have to tell you about a new friend I made this week. 🦋 And I didn’t even have to leave the house. I was hanging out on the deck as usual, when this beautiful orange flutter appeared over the fence. I watched it come closer, and closer, and then it landed RIGHT ON MUM’S HAND! And there it stayed and had a rest, and we had a good look at it. Of course we were very careful not to scare it. It smelled like summer. And when it had rested enough, it flew off again, over the fence. I hope it comes to visit again.

Love, Belle 💞💞

We ask this not to cause pain - but because the answers matter.

Because the people who answer this question honestly are the ones who go home and make that call. Who say the thing. Who stop waiting.

We've sat with hundreds of families in Christchurch. And the thing we hear most - more than anything else - isn't about the funeral.

It's: "I wish I'd told them."

If there's someone in your life you've been meaning to reach out to - today is a good day.

💛 Feel free to share this if it resonates.

Most of our team will be taking a little time with family this Easter Sunday.

Renee is available if you need her and we're back in full from Tuesday. And as always — if you need us, we're here.

From all of us at Simplicity Funerals Christchurch: rest well. Hold the people you love a little closer this weekend. 🌿

Easter has a way of making absence feel louder.

The empty chair at the table. The chocolate you'd have bought for them. The traditions that continue, and the ones that quietly don't anymore.

If you're carrying grief into this weekend — you're not doing it wrong. Grief and celebration can sit in the same room. They often do.

Wishing you gentleness, wherever you are this Easter. 🕊️

Dear Team Simplicity
Guess where I went yesterday: That’s right, to the rescue. It was early in the day when mum and I got our gear together and walked down the street. I was so excited when I realised where we were heading. You know, usually Charlene comes to my place to give me a manicure/pedicure. But this time we were the ones visiting her and all the other volunteers at the Rescue. That was so much fun! I got loads of treats – even the good one with possum, and all the pets and cuddles a girl could ask for. I got so excited that we didn’t do nails after all – that means Charlene will come to visit next week. Fine by me. I do enjoy her visits.
Love, Belle

PS: we finally got an update on Belle’s health. And the news is so-so. It looks like Belle has signs of early heart disease, some arthritis (old bones, no big surprise there), and the cancer may or may not have made a return. We won’t be able to tell without general anesthetics, but with heart issues we have decided against that. Like in many old dogs, the muscles in her back legs are weak and she is sometimes trembling. That said, she is happy and in WAY better shape than we expected when she visited the rescue, so instead of having to make very difficult decisions, she will be on increased pain meds, get all the support for her joints and heart we can give her, and make her life as amazing and comfortable as possible for as long as it lasts. 6 years and counting since we made that promise to her.
