The Zone is a Sports Science & Wellness Centre offering a wide range of health, wellbeing and sports performance programmes to athletes, groups, organisations and individuals invested in optimising their health, wellbeing physical activity status. These services include:
- Athlete Development Programme (ADP)
- Secondary School Experiential Fitness Testing
- Endurance performance testing and analysis
- Health, wellbeing and physical activity programmes

Location: Ara Institute of Canterbury's Christchurch City Campus in the Whareora building (House of Wellbeing), located on the corner of Moorhouse Ave & Barbadoes Street. Please note: the information posted on this page is checked by degree qualified Associate Registered or Full Registered Nutritionists who are members of the New Zealand Nutrition Society and qualified strength and conditioning coaches or personal trainers holding a certificate in fitness.

It's world vegetarian day this Sunday!

To celebrate the wonderful world of plants, we challenge you to try eating meat free once a week.

Meat alternatives include:

Legumes (chickpeas, all the beans!, lentils, split peas etc)
Nuts and seeds
Soy products
Dairy products
Eggs

It's a great way to explore foods and find new recipes!

Struggling with the cost of food at the moment?! We hear ya.

Here's our top tips for helping you to navigate the spend...

1. Find a meal planner template on google or search your app store. Write down all your meals and snacks for each day of the week - can you use leftovers from dinner for lunch the next day? What ingredients do you already have in the cupboard that you could make a meal with?

2. Use your meal planner to write your shopping list

3. Did you know that most of the fresh foods - fruit and vege, milk, eggs, cheese and meat are around the perimeter of the supermarket? Aim to stay around the edges and only pop into the aisles if it's on your list!

4. In the supermarket, you will see price tags for every item. Look closely at this tag and below the price of the product, you will see a price per 100g. Use this price to compare different products and you'll be getting value for money!

5. Have you noticed tomatoes are super expensive in the middle of winter? That's because they're not in season - it's difficult to grow them when it's cold! Choose fruits and veges that are in season and you'll find they're a lot more affordable. Although, unfortunately weather events can significantly impact this also.

A 20-minute functional movement test to analyse key fundamental movement patterns

Are you getting bored of the holidays? Running out of ideas for you or the kids?! Need a break from study?

Here's some activities that involve physical movement that we've found that you might like to try this week! Remember - movement can improve mood and help you to sleep better 🤩

1. Shoot some hoops - the CCC website has a map off all the bball courts in CHCH! Don't have a ball? You can get one at the warehouse for as little as $7!
2. Hill walks - check out the 'walking track map' on the CCC website to find a walk suitable for you
3. Trampolining - did you know there are a handful of trampolining arenas in CHCH? That's right, a whole arena of trampolines where you can jump until your heart's content - for all ages!
4. Check out the pools - find your local swimming pool (maybe indoor at this time of year 😅). You can swim in the lane pool, join a fitness class like aqua jogging or aqua zumba, relax in the spa or sauna or have fun in the kids pool!

The Zone team hope you're having a relaxing long weekend so far and enjoying whatever it is that 'fills your cup!'

The days are starting to get cooler so we thought you might like this cosy Easter themed breakfast idea. Chocolate for breakfast? Yes please! 🤤

Easter Porridge

½ cup (40g) rolled oats
1 heaped teaspoon cocoa powder
1 teaspoon almond/peanut butter
1 teaspoon maple syrup
100ml milk

1. Add all ingredients to a pot and stir.
2. Cook over a medium heat for 3-4min, stirring until it thickens. Add more milk if you need.
3. Pour into your bowl and add your favourite toppings.

- banana
- coconut
- walnut pieces
- toasted oats

Have you heard of WHO - World Health Organisation?

Today is their 75th anniversary.

In 1948, countries from all over the world came together to to create WHO, "to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable – so everyone, everywhere can attain the highest level of health and well-being."

New Zealand is a member state of WHO and participates in WHO's decision making!

Why is this relevant to The Zone?
In The Zone, we work to promote health and wellbeing to our community and clients and refer to WHO's health recommendations when it comes to things such as nutrition and physcial activity.
