We went on an avalanche course over the weekend with such a rad crew! Taught by the absolute best ⛷️❄️
The amount we learnt about snow and terrain and avalanches in just two days was impressive, and I'm so excited to get out more in the back country and put my new skills to use. (Hopefully not actually having to avalanche rescue 😱 but understanding how to avoid one...yes please!)

And yes, the hilarity of doing an avalanche course when there is maaaayyybe 5cm of snow is not lost on me 😅

Skedaddle Trail Marathon 🏃‍♀️⛰️

I stepped up to the marathon distance this time and it was a fantastic challenge after doing the 30k and 15k in previous years. No podium for me this year, but insanely proud of myself for making it in 9th after testing with iron below the lab ranges just 2 weeks ago. (Don't be like me, and make sure you get your iron tested semi-regularly if you do endurance sports, ESPECIALLY if you're female 🫣)

Highlights from the day include:
☀️ finally nailing all the factors needed to not cramp during the race! (I've battled cramps all my races the last 2 years)
☀️ the weather! WOW does this event have some serious luck. 3 years running, end of April and they've always had sunny days.
☀️ The people. What a cool crowd of runners. Had many fun, inspiring and supportive chats with runners while slogging up hills together.
☀️ Feet in pretty descent shape thanks to my socks and shoe combination. Love all these little details coming together.
☀️ seeing absolutely smash her 10k race in under her predicted time, and by far the steepest trail she's ever done. Couldn't be prouder 🥹
☀️ and to top the whole day off, being surprised by .r.roxburgh and at the finish line who showed up to cheer us on. what friends! 🥰

Thanks for another epic event. You knock it out of the park every time 🙌

Hi, I'm Alaina 👋 A wee reintroduction, as i’m yet to do this since I changed full time work FOUR 🤯 months ago!
I am now a full time trainer at the beautiful in Christchurch, NZ. My passion is helping people build strength and confidence in their bodies that enable them to do all the other cool things in life they want to do. Getting strong in the gym is a tool to be fitter when out running trails, or biking, or skiing, or playing with your kids or grandkids. Getting stronger is important to prevent injury, improve balance and change your body composition! I also have a strong focus on helping people get back to sport and activity post-injury.

How to work with me if you're interested:
▪️ Join The Well gym and see me for casual or regular sessions at a members discounted rate.
▪️ See me for regular private training sessions at The Well (you do not have to be a member).
▪️I'm also available for nutrition supplement review consultations and organising high quality supplements for you as needed. In person on Mondays or online.
▪️ And last but not least, I am available for online sessions to write running training plans if that's your jam 🏃‍♀️💨

Available mon-fri so please reach out if you've been wanting to get started making some strength or fitness gains 💪 🏋
Here's to be able to do all the epic stuff you dream of 🔥

Happy New Year from me in the depths of winter in Japan, to you, wherever in the world you are ❄️☀️🍂🌷
I hope you've had a restful festive season and done lots of things to make your legs tired, your heart refreshed and your belly full.

Yesterday I skinned up a mountain to see the top of an active volcano, skiied a lot and devoured sushi. With friends 🥰

This is the soul filling sort of stuff that I work to keep fit and healthy for ⛷️🏔

My hope for you is that whatever you want more of in your life, that this is the year you have the courage and fortitude to just get stuck in and do it. 2 years ago I couldnt ski, and now I can't imagine my life without it. You're capable of anything 🫶

Find your support system, your tribe, those that cheer you on in the struggle and fist bump you at the victory 👊 they exist, and they're life's treasures.

Lots of clients have told me over the years that they struggle to make friends or meet new people as adults and if I can give any teensy bit of advice it's follow your passions, whatever they are, and you'll find the equally passionate people. It's scary to join or try something new, and maybe you'll hate it and need to try something else, or maybe it will take a while to 'fit in.' Or maybe, just maybe, it will be the best life course shift that ever happened to you 🤗

🏃‍♀️Valley Ultra 2024 🏃‍♀️
From the lead up to the actual day, my first ultra was WILD!
I battled through 2 significant injuries and 3 bouts of sickness during training.
Then a week before race day Helicopter Hill was on fire and the course had to be re-routed. We were lucky it even went ahead!
My body decided that a 2am wake up on race day was what was going to happen, whether I liked it or not 🫠
The morning of the race, we had 140km/h winds at the top of Cheeseman, so the course got re-routed again. I got blown over while running multiple times 😳 (but never lost my hat! 🙌).
And then, after a gorgeous course I finished the race as 7th woman with crossing the finish line with me 🥰
So proud of my body for what it's capable of and so grateful for the ability to run and get out in the hills as often as I do. Running has been my therapy this year 🤍
There were many less than ideal things throughout the race (25km of a quad cramp 😫), but is anything in life ever ideal?! A good lesson that I can only control my effort and my attitude 👊

A huge shout out to for my training plan. Everyone should have a coach to take all the mental load off (and keep me honest with myself 😂)

Here's to learning and growing before the next adventure 🤙

11 years training here and 9 years working here draws to a close today. 🥹
What a ride the journey into not only being a personal trainer but being self employed has been.
So thankful for all the support I've received from my colleagues over the years. It's been a truly life-changing experience for me, and I've worked with and met the most inspirational people.
I've met and married here 🥰
I've made some of the best friends I could ever hope for 🫶
I've had the privilege of helping people smash big scary goals and also helping people learn to make tiny sustainable healthy habits.
I love my job and I absolutely do not take that for granted.
On to the next adventure ✨️✌️

Continuous glucose monitors are a hot topic!
I recently wore a Dexcom CGM for 10 days. Here are my thoughts:
- fascinating overall to see that my blood glucose levels remain relatively stable, tending toward low rather than high, with normal fluctuations around food but nothing dramatic.
- blood sugar peaks during exercise. Which makes complete sense as my body is mobilizing sugars for my muscles to use to fuel the exercise. It helped me to understand I need to refuse quite quickly after hard sessions before it plummets.
- I had my Ski accident while I was wearing the monitor and it got the highest right after that compared with any time during the rest of the 10 days. Adrenaline sure pumped my blood sugar through the roof! Showed just how much stress can affect your blood sugar levels..and therefore your mood and energy!
- wearing one is a little glitchy if you're a side sleeper like me. The pressure on my arm would constantly make the sensor think I was having an urgent low and would set off alarms. Obviously this would be more important if I was actually diabetic but it was quite annoying for many nights until I figured out how to disable the alarms.
- do I think everyone should wear one for interest sake? Absolutely not! They are about $130 for the 10 days so not the cheapest and I think for many people simple nutrition understanding is all that would be needed for benefits. Glad I did it though!

☕️ Do you use caffeine for performance? ☕️
Caffeine supplementation or consumption has been shown to be a performance enhancing aid, especially for endurance sports, but also in resistance and high intensity activities.

What is my why?
This has been on my mind a lot lately. I get out and run in the rain and cold and dark. I go on long hikes that exhaust me. I push myself in the gym when the couch sounds quite comfy. Why??
After 8 years in my job and helping older people who 'let things slip a little bit' years ago and now can hardly move without pain, i've realised I don't want that to be my fate.
I want to live NOW for my 70 year old self: still be able to do all the things I love without pain or discomfort.
But I know full well I might not ever get to 70, so I also want to live for my 7 year old self who just wanted fun adventures and to get out and explore with her friends.
What is your why? What keeps you out doing hard things when you could otherwise choose the comfortable route?

I'm 34 years old, which means technically I could begin my perimenopausal phase of life from next year. The liklihood is quite low as usually we will experience it at a similar age to our mother's (50 for me) but the possibility is there nonetheless.
Perimenopause is often associated with unpleasant symptoms and sadly like most women's health things is often lumped into a category of "embarrasing" and "let's not talk about it." Doing what I can now to ensure I've got happy hormones throughout these next few decades of life is top of my priorities: strength training, eating enough protein, looking after my digestive system and liver, managing stress with things that fill my cup and letting my body experience natural ovulatory cycles. We are going to be delving into all this at my upcoming workshop this Saturday 15th June. Would love to see you there, link in bio to book ♀️💖

Are you a salty sweater? 🥵 do you get muscle cramps while exercising? Headaches during or after exercise? You may be losing more electrolytes than the average person.
Supplementing with electrolytes if your exercise is more than an hour should be a given!
I personally lose a lot of electrolytes during long runs or races and find I need upward of 700mg of sodium per hour. To put this into perspective a 250ml serving of powerade or has about 100mg.
Do you use electrolytes already? Any fav flavors or brands? Pure orange all the way for me 🍊
