Regan's holiday availability -

I hope this finds you family happy and healthy.  It's coming up to that time of year so I'll be taking a short break over the festive season  to give the hands and elbows (and needles!) a break. Am finishing up on the 22nd December and will be back in action from the 3rd January onwards.

Abnormal breathing patterns can have a large influence on our health. I see this happening with clients who have difficulty being able to breath the way we were designed to, due to either as a result of current or chronic pain, ongoing stress, or even from a change in posture.
The less aware we are of our breath, the more impact it has on health.

Being aware of breathing has shown to have vast benefits with all aspects of health; from athletic performance to pain management, from reducing the effects of trauma to helping with anxiety and depression..the list goes on.

A classic sign of a non-optimal breathing pattern is chest breathing when we are at rest. This can hugely affect day to day functioning in multiple ways.

Here is a test to see if you chest breathe:
In lying, place one hand on your chest and the other hand on your naval. Focus on taking in a normal-size breath so that your abdomen rises (pushing up the lower hand) but the chest stays relatively still. If the chest continues to rise and if the shoulders shrug towards the head, then there is an altered breathing pattern.

To improve this, continue to do this exercise regularly. Work your way to 10 seconds of belly breathing 10 times. When ready, perform the same activity in sitting, then standing, then walking.
If this is hard to do, keep practising this exercise and it will help improve back issues, increase cardio-based activities, reduce anxiety, and many more benefits.

if this topic interests you, I recommend “Breath - The New Science of a Lost Art” by James Nestor. A fascinating look into traditional and modern breath techniques.

Do you or anyone you know have back pain? Well the cat cow exercise is a great example of a yoga pose that is now commonly being given for anyone having back issues.

It is a relatively simple movement that can have benefits such as:
- Can improve the movement in the spine, hips, knees, shoulders, and wrists.
- Help with blood circulation and nerve health, enhancing spinal functions.
- Activate your core muscles, which play a vital role in supporting your spine.
- Help calm your body and quieten your mind by controlling your breathing patterns
while doing the exercise.
- As you breathe more deeply, your diaphragm massages the abdominal organs
that can improve their functioning.

Check out the links below to see how it is performed.
The 1st link below is the standard cat cow exercise; the 2nd link is a more detailed version that is great for improving vertebral mobility:

While it’s common knowledge that walking is great for physical health, here are five benefits of walking after eating a meal. Some of them may surprise you..

1. Regulate blood sugar

A study in Sports Medicine found that when people went for a light walk after eating, their blood sugar levels rose and fell more gradually than if they stood up or continued sitting. Participants' insulin levels also remained more stable during walking than with standing or sitting.

2. Improve digestion
Walking after eating can aid in digestion. A study in PLOS One found that walking stimulates the stomach and intestines. This can help food move through the digestive system more rapidly. It can also help reduce bloating, especially for those with irritable bowel syndrome.

3. Lower blood pressure
Walking after meals can also help lower blood pressure. As hypertension is one of the leading causes of heart disease and stroke, it's important to find ways to reduce high blood pressure. A study in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care found taking three 10-minute walks every day can help reduce diastolic blood pressure in people with prehypertension. Those with more severe hypertension saw more significant reductions.

4. Burn calories
Walking after eating can help with weight loss as it can boost your metabolism helping you burn more calories from fat, as previously mentioned, aid digestion helping to improve how well the food is used in the body.

5. Elevate your mood
Walking after a meal can improve your mood. Exercise helps reduce the levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol, in the body. It also increases positive hormones like endorphins and oxytocin (also known as the love hormone). These hormones not only help you feel good, but they also help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

In general, the heavier the meal, the more benefit to walking soon afterwards. Keep in mind that walking after a meal doesn't have to be all or nothing. If you can only manage a couple of minutes in the beginning, that's better than not walking at all. What matters most is getting into the habit of walking after mealtimes and creating consistency within your routine whenever possible.
