A reminder just for us woman and young ladies today
✨️Rosalind Franklin (DNA Double Helix)The Creation: British chemist and X-ray crystallographer Franklin captured "Photo 51," an image that provided the critical evidence of DNA's double-helix structure.
✨️The Takeover: Her colleagues James Watson and Francis Crick obtained her unpublished data and used it to build their famous DNA model. Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins received the 1962 Nobel Prize, while Franklin’s foundational contributions were omitted.
🍃Margaret Knight (Square-Bottomed Paper Bag)The Creation: In 1868, Knight invented a machine that revolutionized the packaging industry by automatically folding and gluing square-bottomed paper bags.
🍃The Takeover: A man named Charles Annon stole her sketches and attempted to patent the machine himself, arguing that a woman could not possibly comprehend such mechanical complexity. Knight fought back, provided detailed records of her design, and won the patent in 1871.
✨️Elizabeth Magie (Monopoly)The Creation: Magie created The Landlord’s Game in 1903 as a protest against the greed of monopolies and to teach the single-tax theory of economist Henry George.
✨️The Takeover: Decades later, a man named Charles Darrow learned the game from friends, copied the mechanics, and sold it to Parker Brothers in 1935 as his own invention, Monopoly.
🍃Ada Lovelace (Computer Programming)The Creation: In the mid-1800s, Lovelace translated an article about Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical computer, the Analytical Engine, and added her own extensive notes. Within these notes, she wrote the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine, making her the world's first computer programmer.
🍃The Takeover: Babbage was widely credited as the mastermind behind all aspects of the machine and its potential, overshadowing Lovelace's theoretical programming insights.
✨️Chien-Shiung Wu (The Wu Experiment)The Creation: Wu, a celebrated experimental physicist, developed the process for separating uranium metal during the Manhattan Project and later designed the Wu Experiment, which disproved the law of conservation of parity.
✨️The Takeover: The two male theoretical physicists who proposed the underlying concept, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Yang, received the 1957 Nobel Prize for her experimental work.
🍃Hedy Lamarr (Radio Guidance System)The Creation: During World War II, Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil co-invented a "frequency-hopping" spread spectrum technology to prevent torpedo guidance signals from being jammed.
🍃The Takeover: The Navy initially dismissed the patent, and because it was classified, Lamarr received no credit or royalties at the time. Her invention laid the groundwork for modern Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.
