Health NZ has lifted its health warnings at Corsair Bay | Motu-kauati-iti, Cass Bay | Motu-kauati-rahi at jetty, Cass Bay | Motu-kauati-rahi at beach, and Rāpaki Bay at beach. A health warning has also been lifted for the Hurunui River at SH1 Bridge.

Health NZ issued a health warning on Saturday 10th January after being advised by authorities that there had been a discharge of untreated sewage into Motu-kauati-iti | Corsair Bay. Latest water testing results show faecal bacteria levels at these sites are now below guideline values, and the health warnings have been removed with the water at these sites now suitable for recreational use.

On Tuesday 9th December a harmful algal bloom health warning had been issued for the Hurunui River at SH1 Bridge - this has now been lifted. Recent cyanobacteria surveys of the Hurunui River at SH1 Bridge has shown the cover of potentially toxic harmful algae (benthic cyanobacteria) has reduced and is now below levels that are of concern to public health.

❗️Health Warning❗️

Health NZ has issued a health warning after being advised by authorities that there has been a discharge of untreated sewage into Motu-kauati-iti |Corsair Bay.

This health warning includes Corsair Bay | Motu-kauati-iti, Cass Bay | Motu-kauati-rahi at jetty, Cass Bay | Motu-kauati-rahi at beach, and Rāpaki Bay at beach.

Dr Imogen Evans, Public Health Medicine Specialist for National Public Health Service, says “Water quality at the affected site is not considered suitable for recreational uses including swimming because of the risk to health from the bacteria and other pathogens”.

Water contaminated by human matter may contain a range of disease-causing micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria and protozoa she says.

Eating fish or shellfish from these sites should be avoided. If fish are eaten, remove the gut and liver and wash in clean water before cooking.

As the weather heats up across Canterbury this weekend, remember these simple tips to stay safe in the heat:

💧 Drink water often, even if you don’t feel thirsty

🧢 Keep cool – seek shade, wear light clothing, and use fans or air-conditioning where possible

🏠 Keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains during the day (if you don’t have air-conditioning) open windows and doors for air circulation

☀️ If you’re outside having fun in the sun, remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap

👪 Look out for whānau, neighbours and friends, especially older people and young children

🐶 Don’t forget your pets – make sure they have plenty of fresh water, shade, and a cool place to rest. Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day.

✅ Cold dips on a hot summer’s day

❌ When you’re heading out for a swim at your favourite lake, river or beach this summer, don’t forget to check the water quality.

Each summer, popular swimming sites across the motu are tested for unsafe levels of bacteria or cyanobacteria (toxic algae). High levels of cyanobacteria can be harmful to humans, dogs, and wildlife.

You can look out for water quality information signs or check online at ‘Can I swim here?’: Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA) - Can I Swim Here? Or ‘Decide with Safeswim’ at safeswim.org.nz

Swimmers are urged to avoid getting in the water within 48 hours of significant rainfall as heavy rain can wash contaminants into our waterways.
