We are currently celebrating National Awareness Week for Diversional and Recreational Therapy. This year’s theme is He Kākano, He Tipu – From Seed to Growth.

"Growth happens through care, nurture, and connection. Just as a seed needs soil, water, and sunlight, people flourish when they are supported with creativity, empathy, and companionship.” (Society of Diversional and Recreational Therapists)

Our Activities Team plans activities to support our residents’ physical, social and emotional needs. In our home, this can sometimes involve spending time and connecting one on one with a resident, and allowing their personality, mood, and interests to guide the time together. Our activities team’s vital work helps our residents to feel good. It enhances their quality of life by building connection, bringing a sense of belonging and purpose, and helping to keep minds and bodies active.

Congratulations on becoming a qualified Diversional Therapist!

We are excited to share that Karin has completed her studies, and she is now a qualified and registered Diversional Therapist. Alongside her caregiving role, Karin became an Activities Coordinator in 2023. As part of her Activities Coordinator role, she provides meaningful activities to engage our residents and support their wellbeing. Karin’s training will strengthen Admatha’s activity programme, giving residents the benefit of a certified Diversional Therapist and further improving the quality of care and activities at our home.

Congratulations Karin. We are so fortunate to have you supporting our residents here at Admatha.

We have a lovely resident whose family visit, bringing with them his great granddaughter. We notice that in her presence, he immediately becomes a loving playful Great Grandad with a twinkle in his eye.

We recently held a celebration of cultural diversity here at Admatha. We made posters and hung flags for the countries represented in our home. The staff provided some entertainment by performing a cultural dance, and we were delighted that some residents and family members joined in with us.

A magic moment from our home:
There’s a resident who rarely seems to be in the mood to engage. Somehow, we’ve created a quiet bond. Every time we cross paths and our eyes meet, she stares at me with a gentle smile. She points at me. I point back. Slowly, we both reach out and touch fingertips, just a simple, soft touch. No words are spoken, but in that small moment, something shifts. Her smile grows, and the weight she seems to carry lightens, even if just for a moment. It’s our little ritual our way of saying “I see you, and I’m here.” And every time, it feels like magic.

To mark Matariki, we planted a lemon tree. We decided to place it into a pot so that it can be taken with us when we move into our refurbished home. We are excited about having it growing in our garden there, and look forward to enjoying its lemons!

We enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea together. Some of the residents enjoyed watching live Matariki coverage on TV, whilst some simply enjoyed being part of the group as our Activities Coordinator did some weaving with them.

Matariki is a wonderful time to remember, reflect and look ahead. We remember loved ones who have passed, and we celebrate the moments of love and laughter in our home. We share joy and stories, and we are grateful for the aroha within our rest home community. May the rising of the Matariki stars bring peace and connectedness.

Here are some photos of our residents involved in activities in our home.

We had a recent visit from lovely Ruby. Ruby is a 6 year old collie who loves to receive pampering and attention from our residents. Mike brings her in and we all really look forward to seeing them both.

We have been enjoying playing balloon toss. This game helps us to connect with each other. It lifts our spirits and is great for hand-eye coordination!

Lastly, we enjoyed a visit from our entertainer, singer and guitarist, Dave T. His visit always brightens our day.

In preparation for ANZAC Day, our residents made paper poppy flowers with our diversional therapist. These handmade poppies were displayed around our home and some were also worn on our clothing, as special badges of remembrance.

On ANZAC Day, residents watched the dawn service and live commemorations on TV and reflected on sacrifices made. Later we joined together as a group to bake traditional ANZAC biscuits. It was a warm and nostalgic occasion.
