Te Arateatea Traditional Maori Healing

Te Arateatea Traditional Maori Healing Te Ara Teatea’s vision is to share wisdom and tools from our ancient Māori tradition Te Ara Teatea is the evolution of what was previously known as Te Maurea.

Now based in Ōtautahi/Christchurch, Ruatau Perez continues his mahi as a kaiako and practitioner of rongoā Māori (traditional Māori healing) alongside his partner. Ruatau (Ngāpuhi, Ngāi Tuhoe) was privileged enough to have trained under renowned tohunga Hohepa Delamere - more affectionately known as ‘Papa Jo’ - for 10 years. Since Papa’s passing, Ruatau has continued to share the esoteric teachings of whare waananga lore, treating countless people using traditional Māori healing modalities and hosting waananga throughout the motu and world. Ruatau’s specialties as a traditional Māori healing practitioner include romiromi, mirimiri, koomirimiri, wai rākau and whare waananga lore. Many of his past students can be found practising throughout Aotearoa, Australia and worldwide. Te Ara Teatea’s page is a platform from which we will share information about everything from upcoming waananga and romiromi/mirimiri clinics, to snippets of esoteric mātauranga, which we hope will inspire and stimulate the sharing of heart-centered kōrero within our community.

A lot of people ask where the koha goes ..?

Koha given at our Community Clinic is returned straight back into the kaupapa. It supports the continuation of this space, from maintaining our whare, covering resources, and supporting the time and energy of our kaiwhakaora who hold this mahi with care.

It also allows us to keep this clinic accessible for our community, so that those who need support are still able to receive it, regardless of their circumstances.

Every koha, big or small, plays a part in sustaining this space and keeping the kaupapa alive for our people

Koha

Koha is more than just a contribution, it is an exchange of energy, a way of giving and receiving that honours both the space and the people within it

Within our clinic, koha allows this kaupapa to continue in a way that is accessible to all. It acknowledges the time, energy, and intention that is held, while also respecting each person’s ability to give.

There is no expectation, only an understanding that koha comes from a place of manawa, whether that is through time, resources, or what you are able to offer.

It is this balance of giving and receiving that helps sustain the space for our community, now and into the future

Why do we offer this space ?
Our Community Clinic space is held with intention, aroha, and care for our people.

We offer this space because we understand that not everyone has access to support when they need it most. Through Rongoā Māori, we create an environment where you can come as you are to reconnect with yourself.

This clinic is about whakawhanaungatanga, healing, and holding space for our community in a way that feels safe, grounded, and culturally aligned.
