Inflammation and Cognitive Decline: What You Should Know
Chronic inflammation is now recognised as a key contributor to cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Inflammation in the body doesn’t stay in one place, it can affect the brain, leading to:
* Increased oxidative stress
* Damage to brain cells
* Disruption of normal communication between neurons
* Accumulation of harmful proteins
Over time this creates an environment where the brain cannot function optimally.
Common (and often overlooked) sources of inflammation include:
* Poor dental health and gum disease
* Leaky gut and digestive dysfunction
* Chronic infections
* High processed food and sugar intake
* Ongoing stress and poor sleep
Many of these drivers are modifiable and often missed. If we address inflammation at its source this may help protect long term brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
Looking after the gut, oral health, and overall internal environment doesn't just help us now but it can help and support your brain for the future.
If you’re noticing changes in memory, focus, or overall health, it is definitely worth looking a little deeper into what’s driving inflammation in your body. The sooner you start the best chance you have of preventing further decline.
