What’s in the tramping pack! All the gear I took tramping on a recent kid-free mum friend overnight tramping trip.

We headed to St James Conservation area a couple of hours drive from Christchurch, and oh so beautiful. Stay tuned for part 2 - the trip.

Is this too much stuff for you? Are you ultralight or take everything just in case? I definitely lean towards the latter 🤷‍♀️ I’ll be handy to have around in an emergency!
adventuring full pack weighing reel over on her page 😂 you’ll see .nz pack weights too. Man that was a fun wee trip.

thank you so much for sponsoring our little biz and whānau with this quilt (more on this quilt real soon too)

Here’s a free school holiday project to keep the kids busy, active and having fun outside around home on bikes for hours on end!

If you’re not up for the project of wooden kickers, the dirt jumps patted down with the back of a shovel can be fun

OR getting little planks of wood and balancing them on something like a round bit of firewood or something similar makes a great little bike seesaw

You can make it into balance courses and loads of other features by just adding loose parts like tyres, more planks, rocks and all sorts

It’s like a mini mountain bike feature park in your own backyard

Hot tip: get on your own bike and play around in it too and the little ones will want to be just like you - getting involved yourself is often a winner to helping the kids engage in it too

Let’s know if you try it out, or any questions or other suggestions in the comments!

Cheers always to for fuelling the projects and adventures

Absolutely gorgeous outdoor road trip stop perfect with kids between Christchurch and Nelson!

I realise road trips are getting further out of reach with the fuel situation, but save and share for you next family road trip whenever it might happen again 🤞

📍 Sluice Box Bridge Short Walk - Marble Hill Recreation Area

HOT TIP: be prepared with bug repellent but don’t let the sandflies get in the way of seeing this stunning spot! We forgot ours on this trip, slapped them away and got a few itchy bites and it was still worth it for me.

We find stopping for a mini hike is such a great way to refresh on an NZ road trip with kids, and it’s fun for all of us (anyone else get bored stopping at playgrounds? You don’t get to see the cool things?!)

Basic long drop toilets at the car park - turn off into the Marble Hill Recreation area just south of Springs Junction and cruise down the gravel road past camping and picnic areas until you see the signage.

If you’ve been let us know in the comments and if you’re planning to, go ahead and ask any questions ⬇️

You can follow for the coolest app showing you sweet spots like this to go with kids in NZ

Follow along for loss of spots, ideas, and sharing of our little adventures with little kids as we parent outside.

A beautiful little family friendly short walk perfect for a mini outdoor adventure with kids near Greymouth, West Coast! Share with your Christchurch parenting mates and organise a trip across to the other side of the island 👌

📍Coal Creek Track, Greymouth

This was a cool getaway from Christchurch with kids for us - we took a bus there! Stay tuned as I’ll write up a blog post on this trip.

Handy to know:
- 3.5kms return walk, relatively easy track well maintained when we were there last year
-no toilets 🙃
-plenty of shade and shelter under the gorgeous native forest
-not pram friendly, there are stairs - you’ll need a carrier for this one for babies
-we didn’t swim but apparently it’s good for it according to the DOC info

A great little trail for kids to enjoy, take your time, stop for a splash, notice the little things

If you’ve done it let us know what you thought, or ask any questions below ⬇️

A favourite early Autumn outside family activity for us!

Foraging berries is super fun and the kids love it, they’re beautifully juicy around Christchurch/Canterbury at the moment.

We’re clear with our kids that they do not eat anything they forage unless they have checked with one of us, and if we’re not 100% sure then nobody eats it.

Do you go foraging with your kids? Love to hear your experiences below and your favourite fruit/nut to forage!

Camping with the family in Kaikoura, the land of delicious kai moana and stunning marine wildlife at the doorstep! Share with your Christchurch family friends and organise a camping trip there while it’s still autumn! It’s magic!

📍Kaikōura, South Island New Zealand

I’m trying to be mindful about sharing general experiences rather than exact locations to people can be inspired and look into it but not cause influxes of visitors to specific places when reels go viral!

So… in Kaikoura you have options from multiple holiday parks, more back to basics campgrounds, DOC owned campsites and DOC huts on tramping trails. There will of course be more gems I don’t yet know about myself.

My biggest camping with kids hack learned from this trip was to take extended family (lol) - we had grandparents, uncle and aunty and jeez that makes it easier as setting up and packing down a bigger set up is no joke with wee ones. I tend to take a little tramping tent when it’s just me and the kids for ease and speed of logistics.

Thanks to and for being awesome sponsors with food and gear respectively. Big ups to these Kiwi brands with cool values and people behind the scenes.

Our tent is and it’s truly fantastic. The blackout room makes sleep and naps much more manageable with young kids and the inflatable option is more efficient with full hands. Their sleeping mat options are really comfy too, we have Monstamats.

Last thing is that autumn is actually an awesome underrated time to go camping. It’s not too hot in a tent during the day and not too cold overnight (with good gear).

If you’re wanting to go camping with young kids but don’t know where to start please ask questions in the comments so me and others can help you out. There’s no silly questions!

Epic family friendly fishing workshops in Christchurch! Designed to take the kids along and learn some good stuff to get parents and kids out fishing confidently. Share with your parenting mates keen to get into fishing with the whānau.

We had such a great day! Feel free to ask any questions about the workshop below.

You can follow .nz to keep an eye out on future dates and see when he launches the hands on fishing workshop experiences (getting a glimpse of this ourselves today, they’ll be awesome).

Today’s hiking meet up was filled of exploration over at Cass Bay. The Little Hitchhikers (babies in packs) walked to Naval Point and back, the Little Budding Trampers (toddlers/kids) took a child paced walk towards Corsair Bay, and the Little Naturalists (nature play group) stayed to explore the beach, find shells, play with sticks, explore the rocks, collect sea glass, pick wild berries, climb on the roots, run up and down the grassy hill, took mini adventures on the trail and more.

Thanks everyone for joining us!

(Note the people of the meet up aren’t pictured for privacy reasons)

our next one is in a fortnight at Wooded Gully, visit our website for more info www.kiwikidsoutdoors.com

Just good quality and achievable family outdoor adventure 30 minutes from Christchurch CBD✌️

Walking AND biking trails, or a well designed pump track if you want to stay in one spot. Share with your adventure family friends and head out for an active catch up!

📍McLeans Forest Walking and Biking Trails - McLeans Island

The entrance to this spot is off McLeans Island Road - if you plug into google maps it’ll get you there and during open hours the staff are always friendly and happy to give you tips on trails + you can hire out bikes here (including stuff for little kids).

There are toilets by the cafe.

The pump track is epic too (we’ve done a reel on this way back when)

Plenty of parking available.

There’s a food forest in the area, bbq plates, plenty of green space to play games.

The cafe has lawn games and obviously sells food and drink. Nice spot to chill after some adventure.

What else do you need to know?!

If you’ve been, let us know what you thought.

Bit of a waffle for those fellow parents who love going camping with their young kids! More below ⬇️

Let me know in comments if you want a clearer post on specifics!

I’ll add that it won’t always be perfect, practice and have fun in the backyard with your gear, set your expectations to be realistic - they’re still kids wherever they are! There will be challenging moments! We’ve also been known to use a little on some longer camping trips but we’re easing away from that and are selective about using it.

Also from you guys:
-more warm blankets than you think you’ll need!
-more snacks and more snacks
-don’t forget a rubbish bag (from someone who always does) - I’d add… save your bread bags and they come in handy!
-water painting from cub & Fox
-yoto players (we use these too depending on the trip, headphones when there are others camping nearby - audio books and music
-blackout tents incredible for summer bedtimes and sleep (I second this!)
-premake bolognaise and freeze it to eat on the second night!

What would you add?

I asked my son for advice from his perspective and he said:
“If it’s good fishing bring your fishing rods and if you don’t have fishing rods you can go and buy one. Make sure you bring a small light ruler for measuring your fish”
