Christchurch based hiking/walking meet-ups AND nature play group for babies and kids ages 6 and under - ish! And their parents/caregivers. Emphasis on the ‘ish’ as all ages are actually welcome, older siblings, home schooling whānau etc

These meet-ups are an inclusive space for anyone, experienced to newbie, and all forms of caregiver warmly invited - mums, dads, grandparents, other caregivers or support workers to connect, enjoy some fresh air and nature, and hopefully fill the cup a little.

All forms of diversity are welcomed and encouraged to come along - if you don’t feel welcome and supported - please send feedback 😊

Fortnightly Hiking and Nature Play Meet-Ups for Parents & Caregivers of Children or Babies Aged 6 and Under in Christchurch

All abilities welcome - beginner friendly and designed to be supportive and accommodating of the needs of babies, toddlers, and young kids.

These are free, community-based events.

This term, we’re running three group options, all leaving from the same meeting point each week:

• Little Hitch-Hikers - for babies riding in packs. Walks are approx. 3-4km and take about 1 hour.

• Little Budding Trampers - for toddlers and young children walking alongside parents. Walks are approx. 1-2km over about 1 hour.

• Little Naturalists: Nature Play - for all ages, from babies to young children, to explore and play freely in nature.

Everyone is welcome to hang around and play after walking!

You can sign up for the group that best suits your child and your needs.

Re-done with fresh board walks, it’s perfect for a little wander for families with little kids in Christchurch and pram and wheelchair friendly too.

📍Riccarton Bush Walk

Be sure to stop at the wee platform-y part and just sit to let the bellbirds come out and surround you with birdsong! Or plenty of seats to stop and soak it in along the way.

Fishing with kids - a bunch of tips from my whānau to yours!

It’s been one of my most frequently asked questions recently, so here’s some ideas, and I’m sure I’ve left heaps out so go ahead and add some of your own tips and tricks below!

Or ask any other questions you might have!

For us it was about playing, mucking around and a bit of fishing when they were really little, then building on those experiences over time as they grow older. My boy will fish for 6 hours straight without a bite now 😮

Christchurch parents - add this short hike to the list!

Big bang for buck when it’s only 1.5km to these views (3km return)

📍Mt Sunday, Hakatere Conservation Area, Canterbury

Obviously it looks different with every kid - you’ll see the 20th time number two got in and out of the backpack carrier and some moments of sitting down unable to go ‘any further mum’ while the other is off streets ahead (except up the top where they were on a short figurative leash - keep kids close, plenty of drop offs) … anyway ⬇️

You’ll find it in the Hakatere Conservation Area 20 minutes on gravel road with a few pot holes past Lake Camp and Lake Clearwater which is where we camped overnight.

It’s plenty exposed - take your sunhats, this is the first time I’ve forgotten them for the team 🙃

This one has popped up time and time again on feed and I just had to finally make the trip.

Adventurous, scenic Christchurch day trip to a secluded beach - awesome for families with lots of space and nature to explore after a 1.5 drive and a 10 minute walk to this beautiful, ecologically significant beach 🌊

📍Tumbledown Bay, Banks Peninsula

One for the ‘monthly adventure’ list - save it for later and share with your nature loving parent friends.

This is a gorgeous slice of natural paradise, please practice leave no trace principles and show respect the wildlife by keeping a distance and sticking to the trail on your way down to the beach.

The access road requires confident drivers with a steep gravel road with steep drop offs to the side.

An interesting and fun family day trip from Christchurch with stunning, rugged scenery - 45 min drive from the city.

Hit save for your next outdoor day trip & share with a parenting friend who will be keen to join the adventure.

📍Birdlings Flat Beach

Park at the end of Poranui Beach Rd

Basic toilets by the playground

⚠️Beware dangerous ocean currents, and toxic algae in the lake - neither are safe for swimming and stay a good distance away from possible rogue waves 🌊

It’s considered ok to take a few gemstones from the beach - but not from surrounding DOC land.

Thanks to one of you recommending the museum, we went back the next day to see it and to explore further!

📍Christchurch Adventure Park

Share with your parenting mates for your next play date with a taste of adventure.

Edit: anything featured on this reel is at the bottom of the hill, around the park village area - no need to go up the chairlift which means it’s all free (unless you enjoy something yummy at the cafe)

We love that there are multiple areas for little bikers, providing opportunities for progression right from when they start riding balance bikes - it’s even nice to hang out with babies as the atmosphere is 👌and the fairy houses give a little activity for those not so into bikes yet or little toddlers.

The cafe has a kids table and colouring in, toilets with a change table

There is also a dirt pump track which is currently under maintenance - but that’s yet another section that little ones can hit!

What have I missed?! We just love it.

Get the kids outside in Christchurch with a little ramble around this lake and reserve.

URGENT EDIT: I have just learned This spot is closed until early December due to a death and police doing their job in the area. Pocket this one for a later date 😔 and thoughts to the family.

📍Roto Kohatu Reserve Lake Circuit Walk

2kms for one lake or 1ish km for a wee blat around Lake Rua only

You can swim in selected areas including the spot where you’ll park off Sawyers Arms Rd where there are public loos

You’ll want to park at the Lake Rua carpark off Greywacke Rd unless your out for some engine powered water sport - just make sure you’ve landed your pin at lake Rua, not Lake Tahi, if you’re google mapping it

You can go fishing here within seasonal restrictions and with a license
