Sometimes healing doesn’t always start with kōrero. It starts with doing. ✨

Chris Leqeta, a kaitautoko within our Te Waharoa team, shares how purposeful, hands-on activities can help rangatahi and whaiora feel safe, present, and more at ease.

Te Waharoa is a kaupapa that supports whānau wellbeing through creative, practical approaches grounded in connection and cultural strength.

Recently, Chris spent time alongside a whaiora, turning wild meat into sausages. As they worked side by side, there was space for regulation, trust, and kōrero to progress naturally. By the end, he left with kai he made himself and a sense of fulfilment to match.

This is what it can look like when we meet rangatahi where they’re at.

Creative energy out in the heart of the city 🎨

Through Toi Ora, Kaitautoko Jonny Waters and Jill Sunnex spent time with their whaiora on St Asaph Street, using giant spray cans to bring their ideas to life and create something meaningful together.

Toi Ora is all about using creativity as a pathway to wellbeing. Through hands-on activities, whaiora can focus, create, and experience the positive impact that art can have on the mind and wairua. What started as a simple activity became a chance to express, connect, and leave a mark in a shared public space.

If you’re ever down St Asaph Street, keep an eye out and take a moment to check it out 👀

We’re really happy to be able to share some positive news 💛

Christchurch City Council will be stepping in as interim caretakers of the Phillipstown Hub from 8th April, helping ensure the space can continue to operate while longer-term plans are worked through.

A lot of effort has gone on behind the scenes, with both Council and our team working hard to keep the Hub open for the many groups who use and love this space. During this time, we’ll continue supporting existing bookings and activities, while doing our best to maintain stability for the community.

Over the coming weeks, our staff will be working closely alongside Council to support a smooth transition.

Most of all, we want to say thank you. The voices of this community have truly been heard, and we’re so grateful for the support, care, and advocacy shown for this place.

The Hub has always been about its people — and we’re hopeful for what comes next ✨
