Reading with your child is one of the best things you can do for their language development. In fact, children who are read 5 books a day are said to start kindergarten being exposed to 1.4 million more words than children who are not read to at all (Logan et al., 2019). With the fast pace of life, however, I'm yet to meet any family who regularly reads five books a day. Let's not let perfect be the enemy of good, however - here are a few ways you can maximise your shared reading time like a speech therapist to get the most out of a book.

Every person deserves access to communication, be it signed, written, spoken, gestured, typed. Access to communication is a human right, not a privilege. When we invalidate different ways of communicating, we cut off someone's voice.

I've put together this infographic in the hopes that it explains my approach to supporting neurodivergent children, particularly for parents who are interested in my services. Neurodiversity-affirming practice is something I'm really passionate about, mostly because I frequently meet children who are being failed by older, compliance-based strategies.

While I've done my best to organise my thoughts, please note that this is a brief overview of a BIG topic and I'm still learning. In the wise words of Maya Angelou, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better."

Selwyn-based ≠ Selwyn exclusive! I’ll be travelling into Christchurch in term 3 to support kids in schools. The beauty of mobile-therapy is getting to be flexible.

Hello 👋let me introduce myself. I’m Josie, a speech therapist based in Lincoln, Canterbury. I moved into Selwyn last year (born and bred in Christchurch) and noticed the need for more speech and language services… so here I am.
When I’m not at work, you’ll find me snuggled up with my cat, Albie (right), and a book.

My background is in education and mental health. Children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) have a high prevalence of mental health conditions, but appropriate supports and good relationships can facilitate better wellbeing and educational outcomes. My goal is to support speech and language skills in children so they grow up to have strong communication skills and relationships, and overall improved hauora (health).

My inbox is always open, so flick me an email if you would like to know more about how I can support you and your family.
