One of the beautiful things about Yoga & Pilates is that there is a different pathway for each & every one of us. They work with different bodies, different goals, different life stages- we especially LOVE adapting these fab movement methods to beginners, people over 55 and people with broken bits.

🤔Did you know we do one on one sessions? 🤔

These can be as short as a one off 30 min session of regular 1 hour sessions on a 3x a week basis.

What our students like about our one on ones is that they find that they progress really quickly whether it is to get physical results such as getting stronger, fixing aches & pains, feeling more flexible. Or if the student is wanting something a little bit deeper such as finding a deeper connection within themselves & their breathe.

Some of our one on one students prefer about one on ones is that they are set up in their own time availability and they enjoy the opportunity to tune into themselves without being in a larger group (which can be a bit intimidating to some people!)

What type of broken bits?

Lets be honest there's too much to list but here's some ideas:
🧘 We have a student with PTSD so we have a special spot for them in class that helps them feel safe
🧘 With our concussion students we dim lights and play no music
🧘Students with Osteoporosis we integrate bone density work into classes
🧘For people that are unable to get down on the floor we integrate them into class on a chair
🧘New replacement joints we have set practices that we work within in class

The thing we LOVE about Yoga & Pilates is not only how they help with strength, movement, balance and stress management -its how ADAPTABLE they are to each individual and how easily we can support different experiences for each student in our group classes.

😎Meet the Team: Sam😎

Sam initially became a part of our Adapted family as a student when she was recovering from a spinal surgery that spinal surgery had left me struggling to walk, with little balance and no strength.

After experiencing the benefits of Pilates for herself she decided to become a teacher herself, to help others to improve their life, move better, be stronger, recover faster from accidents, injuries and surgeries and live happier and healthier lives.

Adding Pilates to her 30 years as a gymnastics & trampolining coach, gym instructor, swimming teacher, aqua fit & aerobics instructing & being a stilt walking entertainer & fire performer means that Sam's classes are full of fun, strength, a bit of stretch and a lot of background experience and knowledge.

🥰What a journey from our garage in Halswell with Sophie as a newborn baby on the mat to 3 studios throughout Christchurch and online classes catering to our international and students throughout NZ.
Learning to run a business together as our family as grown has certainly been full of life lessons!!!
Through in a global pandemic, flooding, fires and more has certainly kept us on our toes with curveballs which is definitely one of the beautiful things about working together - we truly never do know what is about to happen next.
The most commonly asked questions are-
🕺Does Jed teach?
Jed is does everything else but teach- he is super passionate about looking after other people -I'm trying to think about a nice way to say it- but no, teaching isn't in Jed's future 🤣
🕺Is Jed his real name?
Jeremy (real name) was nicknamed Jed by his mum a very very very long time ago and yup it seems to have stuck.
🕺How old are the kids now?
10 & 12- yup for those of you that used to get welcomed at the door by the kids in their P.J.'s they certainly have grown up. Soph still teaches from time to time, & well Jack hasn't quite been converted into the family business as yet.

OUR INSPO THIS WEEK: Small & often wins the race also known as: we overestimate what we can achieve in a short timeframe & underestimate what we can achieve over a long timeframe, also known as: you can only eat an elephant one bite at a time....

ADAPTED TIP:

4 steps to achieving anything you want

1. Pick a small 'bite'

2. Get started

3. Do it consistently

4. Do the next thing (aka small bite)

How to build a habit & get started?

Pick out a small chunk, get started, get consistent, move to the next one. This would look like: start with a goal of 4 classes a month, then up it to 6 then up it to 8 within 3 months you go from doing nothing to getting 18 classes under your belt. Compare this to how lots of people try to start (disregarding our advice), 5 classes first week, 3 classes next week, something 'happens' such as getting sick, 1 class 2 weeks later, fall off the wagon again.

How to learn a new movement/posture/exercise?

Pick out a small chunk of it , get started, get consistent, move to the next one. For example, when I teach shoulder stand (yup standing on your shoulders) we make sure you can engage your core (in lots of different positions) engage your buttocks, engage the back of your shoulders, we then make sure you have enough shoulder mobility, then we break down the pose into 10 mini steps to build you up to being able to comfortably floating up to standing upside down on your shoulders!

How to get stronger/fitter/faster?

Create high intensity short bouts of challenge, recover, then repeat. For example rather than doing a movement 20 times (as is often the case in gym classes or exercise programmes written by new trainers) do approx 2-6 repetitions of really high quality/intensity movement. for example rather than walking easily for an hour which creates minimal physiological change on the body- speed walk or even strog (a strolling jog) for 10 secs as fast as you can, continue walking slowly until you recover & repeat- not only will you improve your cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system, lymphatic and endocrine systems you will also burn more calories for up to 72 hrs afterwards than walking without challenge (aka being able to chat easily during your walk & not lose breathe).

A bit of a family affair 🤣
From babies in the garage, toddlers doing our student welcomes & our little people helping with teaching, teacher training & even our workplace sessions it’s been a bit of a journey.
Now Sophie is our chief bolster mending extraordinaire & Jack ,well he still just hangs off stuff to be honest!
Jed is now captain in charge of Grassroots Yoga & Health (our sister studio at The Tannery)
12 years on & THOUSANDS of classes later!!!
We still are celebrating the anniversaries of our garage originals 😍🤩🥳
🙈 And starting to teach the children of some of our initial students whew
🙌 we have also introduced Pilates & Yoga journey to partners, hubbies, parents & grandparents along the way
