HAPPY NEW YEAR TEAM! It’s been a quiet few months as I transition into being a full time therapist at the University. Thank you for all your support x

My Master’s research is coming to an end sometime in 2024, where I am integrating indigenous practices into therapy and wairuatanga philosophies into my processes.

It’s been a challenging year and I’m ready to reap the rewards of six years hard work and being “under the radar.” To everyone who is playing the long game, smashing challenges, and contributing to bettering our communities… the true unsung heroes. Nothing gets me like you humble people of substance creating magic in everyday life 🫶🏽🥰

This is your reminder that it’s ok to watch too much tv, eat a pizza, leave the bed unmade, turn the dish washer on twice to avoid rinsing… just do more of what you need to decompress and minimise stress.

Feeling anxious and stress? Let’s be real, honey. It might not be you, it might actually be them.

We have a tendency to internalise the external. And believe things like “it must be a failing in me” rather than the environments and systems we live in.

Issues that get internalised often but are actually systemic…

➖Those would experience childhood trauma are 15 times more likely to be at risk of su***de.

➖Education and qualifications have become necessary to acquire a liveable income.

➖Uni students are required to work a minimum of 40+ hours a week and sacrifice a paying job for 3+ years.

➖Women do 2.6 times the amount of unpaid work than men in both their career and the home.

➖Indigenous & non-white people are still discriminated in multiple areas: Culture, Economic, Health and Workforce.

➖Children and elderly are vulnerable groups and more likely to be ignored by society than other groups.

➖1 in 6 families in NZ live in poverty

The list could go on and there would be something that each one of you reading this could relate to at one point.

Just know this… you have the power to change the trajectory of your life. Starting with some self compassion and acceptance.

The neural pathways 🧠⚡️created through our experiences and perception charge us to behave the way we do. Any neural “pattern” that doesn’t serve you can be changed. Mainly through belief, new experiences and repetition.

Wow, anyone else feel like April crept up quickly!?

Stress arrives to help us manage. A little bit is part of life. A lot can be overwhelming.

Sometimes it is not possible to “take things off your plate” so, it is about facing the stress in better strength.

Instead of “trying to do less” when you are already in the thick of it, instead try…

⭐️ Staying in on weekdays to recoup
⭐️ Spending time alone or with your family in your spare time
⭐️ Take 30mins more before bed to add a longer bath, skin & hygiene routine.
⭐️ Do a joyful or fun activity when you need an upper
⭐️ Do a quiet calming activity when you need a relaxer
⭐️ Go outside with your morn coffee instead of being indoors
⭐️ Hot to cold showers in the morn
⭐️ Get a massage or treatment
⭐️ Connect to friends
⭐️ Ask for help
⭐️ Set boundaries

A whakataukī that resonates in and out of the therapy room…

I take it to mean that loving meaningful human relationships are not easily broken.

There are times when a connection is lost, weakened or put on hold. But if it is meant for you and good for you it can be repaired.

Sometimes our connections are only meant for a season or a reason. Then it is time to move forward in the energy that serves you better in your healing and growth.

It can still feel sad to let go of ties we know are not good for us.

It can feel difficult to keep holding on to those we know are worth it and meant for us.

Ultimately, you can choose the energy you want and need in relationships.
