The idea that "good posture" prevents back pain is one of the greatest myths in healthcare. Here's what actually works:
1. Move often. The best posture is the next posture. Staying in ANY one position too long even a "perfect" one fatigues your tissues and causes pain. Set a timer and shift position every 30 - 40 minutes.
2. Stop bracing yourself. If you're walking around with your core "switched on" all day, you're likely making your pain worse not better. Most people with chronic back pain are already over-tensing. Try relaxing and letting yourself slouch occasionally. Yes, really.
3. Know your direction. Do you hurt more when sitting? Or when standing? Once you know which direction aggravates you, you can take targeted breaks in the opposite direction to give your tissues relief.
Back pain doesn't have to run your life. There's a smarter way.
