Ongoing bloating, abdominal pain or changes in digestion can be difficult to pinpoint without proper investigation.

A gastroscopy examines the oesophagus and stomach, while a colonoscopy assesses the large bowel, allowing specialists to identify inflammation, ulcers or other underlying causes.

At Intus, these investigations are part of a wider, coordinated approach to understanding your symptoms. You can talk to your GP or self-refer to Intus directly for timely access to specialist care.

Today’s announcement from the government to lower the National Bowel Screening Programme age from 58 to 56 starting September is a positive step forward for bowel cancer detection in New Zealand.

Earlier screening will identify more cancers and pre-cancerous polyps sooner, when treatment is often most effective.

While screening is incredibly important, it’s equally important to remember that symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, bleeding, ongoing abdominal discomfort, or unexplained weight loss should never be ignored regardless of age.

A colonoscopy is a definitive test to identify or rule out pre-cancerous polyps or cancers. If something doesn’t feel right, be proactive and speak with your GP or you can self refer to a specialist here at Intus.

The screening age will be lower from 58 to 56 in September in the latest step towards aligning with Australia

Colonoscopy isn’t just used when symptoms appear.

For people with a family history of bowel cancer or increased risk, it plays an important role in early detection and prevention. During the procedure, the bowel lining is carefully examined and polyps can often be removed at the same time, reducing future risk.

If you’re unsure about your personal risk, it may be worth a conversation with your GP or reaching out to the Intus team directly.

Colonoscopy is an examination of the inside lining of the large bowel (re**um and colon). It is a safe and effective procedure used to investigate bowel symptoms, detect inflammation or polyps, and support early detection of bowel cancer.

Endoscopic bariatric procedures offer a minimally invasive option for weight management by reducing the amount of food the stomach can comfortably hold.

Using specialised tools passed through the mouth, the stomach is reshaped from the inside to help people feel full sooner and manage portion sizes more easily. This approach can support sustainable weight loss without traditional surgery and works best alongside nutrition and lifestyle support.

Endoscopic bariatric care is available as part of the comprehensive weight management services at Intus Dunedin, led by Dr Nigel Rajaretnam and his allied health team.
