There’s a particular kind of anxiety or uncertainty that comes with having a sick or injured little one at 2am. Exhausted, second guessing yourself, trying to work out what matters and what doesn’t.

Last weekend we launched our new “Small Ones, Big Questions” session with Claire, created for parents and caregivers wanting practical, calm, real-world support around common childhood illness and first aid.

Not emergency medicine lectures or fear-based teaching.
Just helping ordinary people feel a little more capable in overwhelming moments.

One of the things we talked about was parents are already doing extraordinary things for their kids every day. Sometimes what they need most is reassurance, practical pathways, and space to ask questions without judgement.

The cooler months are a good time to catch up on the things summer never quite makes room for. Is it time to update your first aid? Or perhaps you and your team are ready to learn lifesaving skills for the first time.
We're out across Christchurch, Rangiora, and Kaikoura this month, with something for everyone, from revalidations to Foundation First Aid and NZ First Aid.
A little something special this month: our Little Ones and Big Questions class on the 20th.

It's the final week of NZ Music Month, and we're closing out with a Kiwi legend.
This month, we've been exploring how some of our favourite homegrown tracks sit right in the sweet spot for CPR compressions - 100 to 120 beats per minute.

We started with Katchafire's 100 (aka Mama), found Six60's Hang On pumping at 112 BPM the same weekend they made history at One NZ Stadium right here in Ōtautahi, and now we're finishing with TIKI TAANE.
Always on My Mind clocks in at 116 BPM. That's not just a great song - that's a near-perfect CPR rhythm.

And honestly? That title says it all. This month has been about keeping the beat, keeping the knowledge, and keeping first aid skills exactly where they belong - always on your mind.

In a real emergency, stress hormones flood your system. The thinking part of your brain goes offline. But rhythm, muscle memory, and practice? Those stay. That's why we talk about familiar songs in our Christchurch classes - your body already knows the beat.

We've popped the official music video and our upcoming training dates in the comments below.

Which Kiwi song would YOU add to the CPR playlist? We'd love to hear it.

New on the blog this week.
"I can't do exams. They make me freeze." We hear this more than you'd think - before class, during class, in private and out in the open. So many people carry that story into first aid training.

New Zealand's training framework is changing, and we moved early. Here's why the written test in the old unit standards never made sense to us, and what's different now.

Wow, what a weekend for Kiwi music here in Christchurch. A few of us were there live... and honestly, what a reminder of just how good our homegrown music is.

So for **Week 2 of our NZ Music Month series**, we’re giving a shout out to ** SIX60 ** and one of their most loved tracks, **Hang On**.

But did you know it’s also a near-perfect rhythm for CPR?

We tapped it out at around **112 beats per minute**, which sits right in the sweet spot for effective CPR compressions.

In our Christchurch classes, we talk about how a familiar rhythm can help your body find the right pace when your brain is under pressure. In a real emergency, adrenaline kicks in, fine thinking can disappear, and that’s where rhythm, muscle memory, and practice really matter.

So next time this song comes on... you might just find yourself practising lifesaving timing without even realising it.

We’ve popped the official music video and our upcoming Christchurch training dates in the comments below.

Who else caught SIX60 live this weekend... or has a favourite Kiwi song they think could work for CPR?

It is NZ Music Month here in Aotearoa. 🇳🇿🎶

We have a wide range of talented artists for all music tastes that come from our land.

But did you know that many of these local hits also have the correct rhythm for CPR compressions?

When you are performing CPR, the ideal timing is between 100 and 120 beats per minute.

First in our NZ Music Month is Katchafire - 100 (aka Mama). It’s not just a perfect beat; it’s a perfect reminder of our mamas.

Clocking in at exactly 100 beats per minute, this track is a great internal metronome. It can help you keep your chest compressions at the steady pace needed to save a life.

Which other New Zealand songs do you think might fit this rhythm? We would love to hear your favorites in the comments below.

The best gift this Mother’s Day?
Learning the skills that could save her life.

Today we celebrate the women who nurture, guide, protect, teach, hold, love, and show up - whether through birth, by choice, by circumstance, by whānau, by friendship, or simply by the way they move through the world.

To every woman who helps make life safer, softer, stronger, or steadier… we see you. We honour you. We wish you a beautiful day.

We all love someone; mums, dads, grandparents, partners, children, whānau, friends… whatever shape love takes in your world this holds true. Most emergencies happen at home.

Love gives us the reason.....Training gives us the skill.

Bring yourself, bring your little ones or your big kids. And yes…especially bring along the biggest kid. We all know who that is. 😉🙃

Come and learn the 3 easy steps to first aid with us, City First Aid. We look forward to seeing you in class.
