I have studied with Yoga Teachers including Christine Villiers in Melbourne (Shanti Yoga), Satyananda Yoga, Donna Farhi, and Mark Withwell (Yoga of Heart). These lineages all share a commitment to traditional Yoga, to the power of the breath, to increased awareness. My teacher training was with IYTA and continues with ongoing explorations. My background is in contemporary dance and writing. I've lived a lot; I work in an office and I'm a mum. I feel strongly that Yoga is not about striving for perfect postures or pushing into pain, which can compromise the body, add tension and even lead to injury. "You don't have to touch your toes to touch your heart," Shanti Gowans.

Yoga is our opportunity to develop our awareness, which will not only benefit ourselves, but everyone around us 🙏

I noticed something this morning, that I’ve actually noticed before, but this time I thought about it a lot during my day and it got me thinking.

When I took my daughter into school this morning there were a couple of things I wanted to talk to my daughters teacher about.

There were also a few other parents who wanted to do the same, so I waited patiently, just standing back, offering space to those before me.

I noticed that my daughters teacher remained fully attentive to the people she was talking to, and at the same time discreetly acknowledging and welcoming every child that walked through the door. It’s something I see her do (and love) all the time.

It’s not an easy thing to do. It’s a very rare event when we’re really, truly present with others.

Then it was my turn to speak to the teacher. As I spoke there were children appearing wanting attention, wanting to share, and parents queuing behind me too. Whilst gently acknowledging others, this teacher kept her attention with me and on the present moment. I could tell she was really listening, her mind and attention completely focused on what I had to say.

It’s such a gift you can offer someone.

We have so many interactions with each other where we are distracted, where we don’t really listen. As adults with each other and as adults with our children. Our minds are wandering to our own thoughts, to the past and to the future; not being aware of the present moment.

When we are distracted by these thoughts, or noises behind us, we miss what’s really in front of us.

Mindfulness - it isn’t a trick or a gimmick. It’s being present in the moment. When I’m with you, I’m with you. Right now. That’s all. No more and no less.

Stop. Breathe. Listen.

This relates beautifully to our recent explorations into satya - truth. ❤️

One of my all time favourite books, is
The Four Agreement’s by Don Miguel Ruiz.
Ruiz bases his book on the ancient wisdom of the Toltecs, a Mesoamerican culture that preceded the Aztecs. Despite its ties to an ancient culture, the wisdom in “The Four Agreements” is profoundly relevant today, mirroring wisdom found in Buddhism and other Eastern doctrines, and is right on track with current cognitive based therapy!
I found it really accessible, the agreements translate with ease into workable guides for my day to day life.

If while washing dishes, we think only of the cup of tea that awaits us, thus hurrying to get the dishes out of the way as if they were a nuisance, then we are not “washing the dishes to wash the dishes.” What’s more, we are not alive during the time we are washing the dishes. In fact we are completely incapable of realizing the miracle of life while standing at the sink. If we can’t wash the dishes, the chances are we won’t be able to drink our tea either. While drinking the cup of tea, we will only be thinking of other things, barely aware of the cup in our hands. Thus we are sucked away into the future—and we are incapable of actually living one minute of life. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

My Story

Becoming intimate with your breath, guiding the mind to follow the breath, the dance of inbreath to outbreath, the rhythm of nature, moving to feel good, connecting into our body and physical energy, celebrating life and releasing tension. #stress_relief' #mindfulness #hatha_yoga #breathing I have studied with Yoga Teachers including Christine Villiers in Melbourne (Shanti Yoga), Satyananda Yoga, Donna Farhi, and Mark Withwell (Yoga of Heart). These lineages all share a commitment to traditional Yoga, to the power of the breath, and to awareness. My teacher training was with IYTA and continues with ongoing explorations, workshops and research. I am so curious about the potential of yoga as an antidote to the busyness and stress of modern life. I’m drawn to yoga nidra, trauma sensitive yoga and yoga for seniors - this is where yoga will just be recognised to be so valuable for helping people to accept, heal, expand and live. Everyone has their own yoga, the one that works for them.

Yoga is not about striving for perfect postures or pushing into pain, which can compromise the body, add tension and lead to injury. Yoga is for healing and expanding by working with the body you have now and loving the life you have now. "You don't have to touch your toes to touch your heart," Shanti Gowans.

I do my yoga every day. Every yoga teacher should be turning to their own practice every day.
