Did you know? Breast density matters.

➡️ Fatty breast tissue (left) appears darker on a mammogram, making cancers easier to see.
➡️ Dense breast tissue (right) looks white — the same color as cancers — which can hide tumors and make detection harder.

💡 Being vigilant about your breast health and knowing your density could save your life. Ask your doctor about the right screening.

✨ Have a Go, Have a Go Together ✨

Today Primrose & I joined Abreast of Life Dragon Boating’s “Have a Go” day — and we absolutely loved it! 💕

There’s something powerful about being in the boat with others who know what it means to walk through breast cancer. Experienced paddlers sat alongside us newbies, offering encouragement, tips, and confidence — just like those who’ve gone before us in this journey of recovery and resilience.

The rhythm of the strokes, the flow of the water, and the strength of the team reminded us: none of us have to paddle alone. 💪

We were also grateful to share our backpacks — designed for breast cancer survivors, by survivors. The team understood the “why” behind them immediately. They got it. 🙌

🌿Kia ora e te whānau 🌿

This week as we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, we’re reflecting on the ways the outdoors restores us – mind, body, and soul.

In te ao Māori, Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) is not just land, but a living being of nourishment. Walking in the ngahere (bush) after our breast cancer journeys has been a way of reconnecting with that source of strength and healing.

When we carry our packs and step onto the trails of Aotearoa, we’re reminded that resilience isn’t only about pushing forward – it’s also about being held, nurtured, and restored.

✨ Kia kaha te reo Māori – let the Māori language be strong.

Today is World Patient Safety Day - 17th September.

For us, safety means supporting recovery and protecting health after breast cancer treatment. That’s why this backpack was designed — to reduce the risk of lymphoedema and to make everyday movement easier.

🌿 Kia ora e te whānau 🌸

This week we join Aotearoa in celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week).

Our tagline “Kia kaha, Kia ū” means Be strong. Be determined. – words that carried us through our breast cancer journeys and continue to guide us today.

In te reo Māori, the noun ū also means breast – so it has always felt like a fitting tribute back to the very start of our journey. 💗

Just as Te Reo Māori is a taonga (treasure) to be cherished and strengthened, so too is the gift of resilience. 💗

I’ve been pushing myself out of my comfort zone lately — by joining Toastmasters.

Why?

Because if Altered Freedom is about anything, it’s about learning to face challenges with strength, courage, and choice. And to do that, I need to learn to tell my story well (and hopefully without tears 😅).

So over the next few weeks, I’m sharing little snippets from my very first Toastmasters speech: From Challenge to Choice.

These are the words that shaped me, and now shape what Altered Freedom is all about. 💕

🌿 Lymphoedema doesn’t appear overnight — it develops in stages.
From Stage 0 (no visible swelling) through Stage 3 (severe, often irreversible changes), awareness and early management are key.
The earlier it’s recognised, the better the outcome 💙

This man is my treasure: my husband, my friend, my cancer supporter, my pacer. Step by step, he helps me go further than I would alone.

Today on Father’s Day, we celebrate dads — but also every partner, friend, and loved one who has walked alongside someone through life’s hardest journeys. You are the quiet heroes. Today we honour you.
