One of the most common things we hear is:
“I’m not sure if I’m wearing it right…”

And honestly — that makes sense.
This isn’t a standard backpack, and the way you fit it makes all the difference.

We’ve just put together a simple visual guide to help you get it sitting properly — so the weight is where it should be (on your hips), and the pack stays centred and stable.

Because when it’s fitted right… it really works.

We’ve even had a customer go from struggling with it twisting to completing a 10km walk with no movement at all, just by changing the order she put it on.

Cancer Survivor Day 💗

There’s something special about being on the water together.

Different stories, different journeys — but a shared understanding that doesn’t need many words.

Moments like the NZDBA Flower Ceremony remind me that survivorship isn’t something we do alone.
It’s found in community, in quiet support, and in simply showing up for each other.

Today, we honour every survivor — and the communities that carry us.

🌱From stillness to movement🌿

There was a time my world felt very small.

Today I’m standing on top of Ōtamahua Quail Island, looking out over Lyttelton Harbour… with a backpack at my feet.

That shift didn’t happen overnight.

But it did happen.

And that’s what Altered Freedom is about — helping people take those steps back into movement, in their own time.

Breast cancer recovery isn’t always about the big milestones.

Sometimes it’s the small things that surprise you…
like how wearing a backpack can suddenly feel different after surgery or lymph node removal.

The womansback backpack was created by a breast cancer survivor and mountaineer who understood how important weight distribution can be after treatment.

Now it’s helping women move comfortably again.

March is Lymphoedema Awareness Month 💙

If you’ve had lymph nodes removed or radiated during breast cancer treatment, you are at risk of lymphoedema.

Not guaranteed.
But at risk.

Lymphoedema is swelling caused by damage to the lymphatic system. It can show up months — even years — after treatment.

Early signs:
• Heaviness
• Tightness
• Subtle swelling
• Clothing or jewellery feeling tighter

And here’s what often gets missed:

Load matters.

Heavy, uneven weight across the shoulder or through the armpit can increase strain on an already compromised lymphatic system.

That’s why thoughtful load distribution isn’t a luxury — it’s prevention.

Our backpacks were designed specifically to:

✔️ Offload shoulders to hips
✔️ Support long-term movement

Awareness is step one.

Altered Freedom exists because two women who had both experienced breast cancer chose to turn their journeys into something that could help others.

Today we celebrate the women who lift each other up — in treatment rooms, workplaces, friendships, and everyday life.

When women support women, incredible things can grow.

I (Kathryn) paddle with a breast cancer dragon boat team.

At every regatta, first-timers stand in the centre of our circle.
We acknowledge the road that brought them here — a road none of us would have chosen.

Then we place our hands on their backs.

Because we understand.
Because they are not alone.
Because from this day forward — we’ve got their back.

That moment gets me every time.

And it’s why our Womansback backpack means more than just a name.
