More on coffee on an empty stomach .

Many people start their day with a cup of coffee before eating anything. While this habit feels energizing, science suggests it may place extra stress on the body-especially for sensitive individuals.
Cortisol, often called the body's primary stress hormone, naturally peaks in the early morning to help us wake up and feel alert. When coffee is consumed on an empty stomach, caffeine can further stimulate cortisol production, amplifying this already high hormonal response. Instead of a smooth boost in energy, this surge can push the body into a heightened stress state.
Research from the University of Bath has shown that consuming caffeine before eating can intensify both metabolic and hormonal stress reactions.
Without food to buffer its effects, caffeine is absorbed more rapidly, increasing the likelihood of symptoms such as anxiety, jitteriness, restlessness, and sudden energy crashes later in the day.
Eating before drinking coffee helps slow caffeine absorption and moderates cortisol release. This supports a more balanced stress response, steadier energy levels, and better overall mood throughout the morning.
