Hi everyone! As we are booking up fast for the holiday season I wanted to let people know I am booking women due up to 10/12/23 and then will start booking again 14/1/24. I know it’s really difficult to find a midwife over the holiday period so thought putting my dates here would be helpful. If you are struggling to find a midwife please call the midwifery resource centre they are set up to help women through this tricky period. If you’d like to discuss care with me please call 0211766822. Loren.

With Omicron becoming more prevalent within our community, you may notice there seems to be so much changing information being shared. So here is a quick update from all of us at christchurch city midwives.
Our ultimate goal is to keep our mothers, babies, whanau and ourselves safe.

Before you come to any appointment or have us come into your home please assess your own health. Let us know if you or anyone in your family have:
A new or worsening cough
Sneezing and runny nose
A fever
Temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste
Sore throat
Shortness of breath

Alongside this please let us know if you are required to isolate i.e if you are positive for covid or you are self isolating due to being a close contact.

By letting us know we can arrange the appropriate level of in person whether that be in clinic or in your home, or a video/ phone appointment as needed :)

As of today women who present in labour can have one support person with them for the duration of their stay.
Surgical masks are to be worn by both women and her support person at all times outside her room or when hospital staff are present in her room.

From the CDHB ...

The need for all health staff to have had at least one vaccination before 11.59pm on Monday 15 November will result in fewer midwives working in Canterbury from next Tuesday 16 November!

St Georges Maternity primary care unit will be particularly impacted, so from Tuesday 16 November 2021 until further notice, they will not be able to accept women who have given birth at Christchurch Women’s Hospital and want to transfer to St Georges for a postnatal stay.

Only women who give birth at St Georges Maternity will be able to spend their postnatal stay in the unit.

Well women with healthy babies who birth at Christchurch Women’s will be transferred to Rangiora or Lincoln primary maternity units.

Any woman who needs to remain in Christchurch Women’s Hospital for clinical care after having her baby will remain in hospital. The CDHB will however, be discharging more women to the care of their LMC as soon as it’s safe for them to return home. The expectation is that most healthy women will be able to return home after 24 hours in hospital or a primary maternity unit.

This will help ensure that the tertiary hospital facilities at Christchurch Women’s Hospital are available for unwell women/babies.

THE CDHB expectation is that well women who opt to have elective caesareans should be able to return direct to their home to the care of their LMC after two nights in hospital. The CDHB do not expect these women to transfer to a primary unit before heading home as the demand at these units will be higher with the reduction of service at St Georges.

The reality is that in the short term, there will be reduced capacity across all maternity services in Canterbury and more well women and their healthy babies will be going home sooner!

Hi everyone, with the latest update of level 4 being extended until Tuesday midnight. Please be aware that your midwife will be in touch to discuss either how your face to face appointment will run . Or how a phone or zoom consult will be done. Under the restrictions of level 4, our priority is to still ensure you and your baby are safe, which maybe adjusting your appointment schedule. Please contact your midwife for any urgent care.
Also see the ministry of health website for updates.
Please note that screening will be done prior to all appointments, so let us know if you or anyone in your family are isolating. Thank you
