Investigation of Muscle Changes in the Childbearing Year

Investigation of Muscle Changes in the Childbearing Year Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant? Would you like to find out if pelvic floor muscles change over the duration of your pregnancy?

Very little is known about the pelvic floor muscle elasticity (stretch) and how it copes with childbirth. Currently, between 10 – 30% of women will tear their internal deep pelvic floor muscle during vaginal delivery. We understand some of the risk factors associated with this birth trauma, however we know very little about the actual muscles themselves, how they behave during pregnancy and how their ability to stretch during pregnancy affects the birthing outcomes. We want to find out more about these muscles which is why we are doing this study. We are hoping that by collecting information on how the muscles behave during pregnancy and post-delivery, we will be able to assist in the development of a risk prediction tool, to help future mothers make informed decisions regarding their birthing choices. This knowledge could ultimately reduce the number of women who will suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction later in life.
