Heads-up for the holidays, Clevedon whānau!
A new Lancet series has spotlighted the health risks associated with ultra-processed foods — soft drinks, highly flavoured snacks, instant noodles, some frozen meals… basically foods where the ingredient list looks like something out of a chemistry textbook..
Eating a lot of these is linked to weight gain, diabetes, poorer heart health and even depression. And it’s not just sugar and fat — they’re cheap, convenient, and engineered to taste so good you keep going back for more. Cunning.
These have been slowly creeping onto supermarket shelves and now some estimates say they make up 40–50% of the average Kiwi household’s energy intake.
Even small swaps help: fresh or minimally processed foods, water instead of fizzy drinks, and whole foods where possible. Your body (and waistline) will thank you!
