As adults we don’t laugh anywhere near as often as we did as children. Laughter Yoga is a unique concept, designed to help people laugh without needing a reason, without having to rely on external factors (such as jokes or alcohol). Research has proven laughter
gives us many physiological and psychological benefits and Laughter Yoga is a FUN way to have a complete well-being workout (without having to wear lycra). It helps us reduce stress hormones, increase our happy hormones and gives us a cardio workout. It’s a scientific fact that our bodies can’t differentiate between fake and real laughter if we’re doing it willingly. During a Laughter Yoga session, we initiate laughter by doing simple exercises as a group, using eye contact and fun activities with fake laughter which then becomes real and contagious laughter (the best health benefits come from 10 - 15 mins of continuous, vigorous belly laughter). We call it ‘Laughter Yoga’ because it combines laughter exercises with yoga breathing, bringing more oxygen to the body and brain, which makes us feel better - more energised and more relaxed. Laughter Yoga was started by a medical doctor, Dr Madan Kataria and his wife, Madhuri, a yoga instructor, in India in 1995 - and now there’s thousands of Laughter Yoga clubs around the world.
