✨Meet our fabulous Beena 💛✨

Beena is one of these rare breed of people who are effortlessly themselves, thrive on authenticity, and offer genuine connection. She is knowledgeable beyond reason yet humble to the max. We could have spoken for days with Beena about everything and anything…We love you very much Beena, we all do and we are so grateful and lucky to have you as part of the Pause Yoga community 💛✨

Come practice with Beena on Wednesdays at 6:15pm for her 60 minute Hatha flow class

Here is a bit more about her:
“Yoga asks the questions”- my teacher once told me. The deep internal inquiry yoga offers is a limitless gift.

I have practiced yoga for 20 years, discovering its benefits when I was pregnant with my eldest child. I am a Medical doctor, a forensic examiner, a yoga teacher and mother of 2 young adult children- I am also inhabiting a body that is getting older and changing. Each of my roles is distinct but also informs and enriches the other parts of who I am.

The practise of medicine is my day job- and one I am deeply connected to. My philosophy of practise could be described as Mind Body medicine, which embraces all the benefits of western medical practice plus the view of the the mind and body are part of a unitary whole -so we always need to be treating the whole person and not just the symptoms they present with. This aligns per-fectly with the practise of Yoga where the mindful, meditative movements serve to ultimately move us towards inner and outer well-being. Not withstanding all the physiological benefits which the An-cients have known but science is now proving.

I subscribe to no specific school of Yoga but have benefited from practising Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Satyananda Yoga over the years And have attended trainings in these and many other styles of yoga.

Underpinning my teaching is that the final “form” of the asana matters less than the “how and why” we practise Yoga. I will always encourage people to be guided by how they “feel“ rather than how the asana looks, with good anatomical, physiological and bio-mechanical principles in-forming the movements.”

✨Yes, you do need to include recovery in your routines ✨

Carving up time for physical and mental recovery is as important as challenging yourself. The key is to find the right balance.

We know that practicing yoga calms your nervous system but it also helps rehydrate connective tissues and supports better gliding of fascial layers. Whether we have an athletic or sedentary lifestyle, this benefits every single one of us, no matter what we are into. If you think you don’t have time for yoga, think again and make time 💥

Your body needs it as much as your mind.

Think of it as investing in your health by downshifting your nervous system, hence lowering cortisol levels, giving your mind a break, increasing joint mobility, energy and creativity. Recovery and downtime is what allows you to keep going, to keep being of service to others, to keep performing and to keep being creative. Only you can make your recovery a priority, no one else. Read this again…

At Pause, we never want money to prevent you from looking after yourself and your health. If you experience financial hardship, make sure you get in touch directly with Cathy and we’ll sort something out for you, no questions asked.

See you soon 💛✨🙌

✨Meet the one and only Claudio ✨

We sat down with a while back to chat about everything and anything. Claudio has been a prominent figure in the Wellington yoga scene since he came to NZ in 2018 with his wife Kerry (and beautiful girl Naya💕). We are very lucky to have Claudio as one of our resident teachers, come and try his Monday 9:30am class one day.

You can also attend his classes at

✨Claudio’s bio:

“I found through the practice of attention, conscious movement and breath, sound and vibrations the path to inner silence and peace.”

Claudio Escutia has been a yoga teacher and active musician for over 10 years. He began his spiritual journey in Mexico with the practice of Tai Chi. After finishing his classical guitar studies at the School of Fine Arts he decided to move to Montreal Canada to study jazz music, where he experienced for the first time the power of the sacred Yogic practices, becoming aware of his breathing, body, mind and soul. When he settled in Canada, he expanded his knowledge by practicing Hatha and Kundalini Yoga, with great masters, he learned to play Kirtan (sacred chants circles) with local musicians and started playing live music for yoga classes.

After 2 years of practice, he heads to the mountains of Quebec and begins his training as a resident yoga and meditation teacher at the Yoga Sivananda Vedanta Ashram, with the renowned professor Praladh, a direct student of Swami Vishnudevananda, one of the first teachers of India in introduce yoga in the West. Claudio receives his certification of 300 hours of Yoga. After finishing his training and after living 6 months of intense Sadhana (spiritual practice) he began to teach Hatha Yoga in several studies in Montreal.

During his classes, Claudio uses ancient and traditional techniques to harmonize physical, mental and emotional levels with the sound of Tibetan bowls, Mantras, Mudras and other Yoga techniques that take you on a journey to the heart, inner peace and silence.

✨Take care of your Nervous System ✨

If you’ve ever felt constantly “on edge,” emotionally exhausted or stuck in survival mode, you might be dealing with a dysregulated nervous system. It’s a phrase that’s become more common lately as more people are realizing that stress doesn’t just affect your mind. It changes your body, too.

A dysregulated nervous system happens when the parasympathetic (resting) and sympathetic (doing) systems get out of sync. Instead of returning to calm after a stressful event, your body stays stuck in high alert or swings between feeling anxious and completely shut down.

The good news is that there is nothing wrong with doing and moving and challenging yourself and all. It’s all wonderful. The trick is to try balancing things out.

Start by asking yourself: how often do I relax? Or even: do I even give myself permission to relax? What do I do regularly to slow down. If I’m a CrossFit aficionado, how do I release tension in my body? If I’m a primary caregiver, do I give myself any breaks? If my job is exciting AND super stressful, how do I take care of my cortisol levels?

First you notice, then you become aware and then you try to reset. It all starts with the noticing first.

Start integrating super simple things to your health routines, like taking a few deeper breaths, or pausing for 5 minutes or power-napping, go for a walk in nature, daydream for a bit. Anything that helps downshift your nervous system. Mindfulness and meditation will have the best effects but if you are not into that, no problem, any of the above will do you great too. The intent is to try to unplug for a bit, even if it’s only for a few minutes or few seconds and train your nervous system to be pliable. Think of “pausing” as kryptonite for your cortisol levels.

Start small but start somewhere…And start today! It’s as important as brushing your teeth, trust me 👍💛

You’ve got this 💛✨

✨What is mindfulness to you?✨

The misconception around mindfulness is that it’s merely perceived as a method of relaxation.

Mindfulness is neuroplasticity at its best.

To me, I see it as tool to strengthen and rewire many crucial areas of the brain to allow you to be able to choose to show up and to respond differently in everyday life.

It is synonymous with boldness, kindness, focus, courage, patience, living fully, being compassionate and understanding, being perseverant, regulated and any other wonderful qualities you can think of.

So yes, part of it is cognitive awareness training or attention training but it is also paired with behavioural reprogramming through emotion regulation and nervous system downshifting tools, kindness and a renewed sense of awareness.

There is nothing passive about it, quite the opposite really, it is a constant exercise that ends up changing most behavioural aspects of your life - notably relationship with the self and the world around you.

Mindfulness is not something you just practice once a week or from time to time, it’s something that becomes part of how you interact with yourself and the world on the daily 💕✨It requires discipline, practice, curiosity, dedication and patience. It’s very similar to learning an instrument or a language.

What does mindfulness mean to you? How does it show up in your life? We would love to hear your thoughts ###
